Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Unless it starts to hurt, nobody ever seems to think about the small sac-shaped organ which holds bile from the liver before it is released into their intestine. What is this poor, neglected body part?

Answer: Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a useful little organ which stores bile made by the liver until a person eats food that contains fat. When the food containing fat enters the digestive tract, the gallbladder contracts and releases its contents into the intestine. The bile then emulsifies fats, allowing them to be absorbed by the body more easily.
2. Which unused, and often ignored, part of your torso, also known as the navel, is actually a scar?

Answer: Belly button

The belly button, also known as the navel, tummy button or umbilicus, is the site where the umbilical cord (which led to the placenta) was attached to the body prior to birth. The scar left behind usually sinks into the abdomen, though some people have extra scar tissue left behind, resulting in a protruding belly button.
3. Who really thinks about the back of their neck? Not many people, I'm sure! It has an anatomical name in English which comes from the French word "nuque". What is it?

Answer: Nape

Many mammals carry their young by picking them up by their napes, though in these cases the back of the neck is called the "scruff". The nape is important in traditional Japanese culture because it is considered an attractive part of the female body and, as such, is often left uncovered.
4. The uvula is a rarely considered body part, which is a shame because it plays an important role in human speech. Where would you find it?

Answer: Back of the throat

The uvula is the fleshy tissue that hangs down at the back of our throats. it helps us to make certain sounds in our speech. Unfortunately, it often contributes to snoring. The word "uvula" is Latin for "little grape", which describes its shape.
5. Not many people spend much of their time considering the arches of their feet, but they are very important in supporting the weight of the body when we stand up. Which two groups of bones form the arches?

Answer: Metatarsal and tarsal

The arches of the feet are important because they create spaces for soft tissues which in turn act as springs to allow the spread of forces across the entire foot. This reduces the risk of damage to feet and also over-exertion on other muscles and bones on the back and legs.
6. The synovial hinge joints between the humerus, radius and ulna sound very important, but very few people spend much time considering them. What are they?

Answer: Elbows

The elbows are some of our most utilised joints and yet we barely ever think about them on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, however, they are fairly susceptible to injuries such as repetetive strain injury, tennis elbow and cubital tunnel syndrome, all caused by overuse or over-exertion.
7. The human tailbone is something we generally only consider when we hurt it, because it is attached to the spine and can cause some discomfort. What is this, usually forgotten, bone's official name?

Answer: Coccyx

The coccyx is the last remnant of the tails that our evoluntionary ancestors would have had. Though it no longer has any physical use, it remains an important site of attachment for many muscles, ligaments and tendons in the back.
8. Unless you stub them, I doubt you give much daily thought to your little toes. They are helpful for balance, but what is particularly special about the little toe compared to all the other toes?

Answer: It has a separate set of muscles and tendons, allowing it to be moved individually

The little toe's separate muscles are the "flexor" and the "abductor digiti minimi", though other foot muscles contribute to its movement.

It is made up of the three phalangeal bones: a proximal bone, an intermediate bone, and a distal phalanx bone. The little toe receives oxygenated blood from a branch of the plantar arch artery in the foot.
9. That vertical groove running from the middle of your upper lip up to your nose has a name, but it's so rarely considered that you probably don't know it. Or do you? What is its name?

Answer: Philtrum

In most mammals, the philtrum carries moisture from the mouth towards the nose to keep the nose wet. However, in humans it is just a skin depression which serves as a reminder of our evolutionary roots.

In Jewish traditional stories, the Angel of Conception taps a child's upper lip before birth to make it forget the Torah, which creates the philtrum.
10. We may think about our hearts, livers and brains a lot, but we rarely consider the organ which filters our body's blood and recycles iron. Which organ is this?

Answer: Spleen

The spleen is an abdominal organ which filters out old red blood cells and holds a reserve of blood for emergencies. It is located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen.

Removal of the spleen causes diminished frequency of memory B cells, which, in turn, can lead to a higher chance of contracting pneumonia.
