Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is an example of a Type 1 symptom in patients with schizophrenia?

Answer: Hallucinations

A positive, or Type I, symptom is characterized by the presence of strange or unusual perceptions and even thoughts or behaviors such as hallucinations or delusions. Conversely, negative, or Type II, symptoms, are characterized by losses or deficits in behaviors.
2. Which of these is NOT a type of delusion a schizophrenic patient might experience.

Answer: Sensory

Tricky, but keep in mind that hallucinations, which differ from delusions, involve symptoms such as unreal perceptions or sensations (think of LSD). Delusions are beliefs which are usually highly unlikely in nature, such as being persecuted by the FBI, or greater still that the next door neighbour's kid can read your mind or thoughts through a radiotransmitter device.
3. Heredity is just one of several factors which can predispose someone to developing schizophrenia.

Answer: True

Many studies indicate that there can be a genetic factor. For identical twins, the risk of one developing the disorder if the other has it is 47% and 100% genetic (genome/DNA) relatedness; sibling: 10% risk and 50% genetic relatedness etc. Genetics, combined with other factors such as stress ans psychological conditions together may lead to schizophrenia.
4. The prescription drug Thorazine, which is used to treat persons with schizophrenia, may cause side effects, including one called tardive dyskinesia. What might a person suffering from this side effect display?

Answer: involuntary movements of tongue and face

This disorder is observed as a side effect of the drug Thorazine and mainly involves movements of the tongue and face. Some people may also produce sucking sounds, stick their tongues out, puff their cheeks and other associated movements.
5. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Electroconvulsive Shock Therapy is still sometimes useful and administered to a schizophrenic patient.

Answer: True

Decades ago, this form of therapy was employed to reduce psychotic symptoms, although it is not as commonly administered today. Interestingly, it is used more commonly on individuals suffering with severe depression if they are unresponsive to all other treatments.
6. Which of these is NOT a common drug trade name used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia.

Answer: Losec

These drugs (referred to by their trade names) calm agitation and reduce hallucinations and delusions.
7. Studies have proven that some prenatal factors may cause schizophrenia. Which of these has no proven link?

Answer: substance abuse

There have been no major studies or evidence which has linked substance abuse to schizophrenia.
8. What is the average age range in which the onset of schizophrenic symptoms develops, particularly in males?

Answer: Teens to twenties

This is merely a range, but most cases have been reported to originate in this age category. It is rare under the age of ten and women tend to develop symptoms later than men.
9. Which neurotransmitter plays the most significant role in the regulating of schizophrenic symptoms?

Answer: dopamine

Original dopamine theories have claimed that schizophrenia is caused by an excess level of this neurotransmitter, particularly in frontal lobes and in the limbic system, although new studies and theories have reasoned that other neurotransmitters such as serotonin and glutamate might also play minor roles in schizophrenia.
10. Which movie featured a math genius suffering from schizophrenia, and won an Oscar for Best Picture?

Answer: A Beautiful Mind

I cried at the end.
