Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a base?

Answer: Caustic soda

Vinegar, which is acetic acid, and tomato juice are acidic. Common salt is neutral. The fact that caustic soda is basic can be checked by a pH indicator.
2. What will the colour of litmus paper turn into when dipped in orange juice?

Answer: Red

Blue litmus paper turns red on dipping into acids whereas red litmus paper remains red. Orange juice contains citric acid and hence it is acidic. Acids are generally sour to taste. But don' t try to taste ones like hydrochloric acid. Now you know why your orange tastes sour!
3. Generally, how does a base taste?

Answer: Bitter

Bases are bitter to taste and soapy to touch. This can be seen with soap water. Better not to taste a base!
4. Which of the following is NOT an indicator?

Answer: Demathalin

Methyl red turns red and yellow; phenolphthalein, colourless and pink; and methyl orange, reddish orange and yellow in acids and bases respectively.
There is nothing like demathalin. I created the name myself!

Answer: Caustic soda

Caustic soda is made to react with oil and the resulting product is used to make soap along with glycerin.
