Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A batted ball hits the FOUL pole. What is the umpire's call?

Answer: Home Run

The foul pole is actually in fair territory.
It is a fair ball if it hits the base of the pole below the fence line (and thus it's not a dinger).
2. Runner on first less than two outs. Ball hit deep to the outfield. The runner, attempting to get off as far as he can touches and rounds second base. The ball is caught and the runner returns directly to first base (i.e without touching secbd base on the way back to first). What is the umpire's call?

Answer: The umpire makes no call unless the play is appealed

This play must be appealed by the defensive team. The only time an umpire can make this call is when it is "by its very nature imminent and is obvious to the offense, defense, and umpire[s]."(Art. 1-5)
3. The umpire awards three (3) bases when _____ .

Answer: a fair batted ball is contacted with detached player equipment or an illegal glove or mitt

This is the only occasion when three bases are awarded. The other three choices warrant a two base award.
4. When the pitcher commits an illegal pitch with no runners on base, the umpire calls what?

Answer: rewards one (1) ball to the batter

An illegal pitch occurs when no runners are on base. If the pitcher commits an "illegal pitch" with runners on it is called a balk and one base is awarded to each runner.
5. A batter's foot is completely out of the batter's box when he swings and misses the ball. The umpire _____ .

Answer: calls a dead ball strike

A batter must make contact with a pitch to be called out. This does not have to be an appeal and the batter is out when he makes ANY contact even if it is foul.
6. There is a runner on first who is attempting to steal second. The catcher receives the pitch and pops up to make the throw. In an effort to get out of the way the batter crosses in front of the plate and in the catcher's way. The catcher notices this and does not make a throw or attempt to throw. Does the umpire call interference?

Answer: Yes

Rule 6.06(c)(2) - "making any movement that hinders the catcher's actions at home plate or the catcher's attempt to play on a runner". Contact is not a required for interference or obstruction
7. The Bases are loaded and there are less than two outs. The batter hits a sky-high ball into the shallow outfield. The shortstop runs moves backwards roughly 40 feet into the outfield grass and settles under the ball. The umpire calls infield fly. This is the right call.

Answer: true

An infield fly does not have to be in the infield. The Infield fly rule is enacted when an infielder settles under any ball hit in fair territory.
8. A right handed pitcher is on the mound with a runner on second base. The pitcher attempts a pick off to second base by hopping counter-clockwise (right shoulder to first base). This is commonly referred to as an inside pick. Is this a balk?

Answer: no

As long as the pitcher did not make a move towards the batter in any motion, it is not a balk.
9. The umpire has authority to rule on anything not specifically covered in the rule book.

Answer: True

This is covered by Rule 9.01(c).
10. With two outs bases loaded. The third strike is dropped and the catcher attempts to make a throw to first to retire the batter. His throw is wild and two runs score. According to the rules what should/could the catcher have done instead.

Answer: Step on home

In this situation the batter may advance to first base because there were two outs at the time of the dropped third strike. The catcher should have stepped on home to effectively force out the runner on third.
