Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the first "Great American Bike Race", today called "Race Across America (RAAM)", take place?

Answer: 1982

In 1982 the first edition of the "Great American Bike Race" was held and it was organized by the cyclist John Marino. The tour began in Santa Monica, CA and ended at the Empire State Building in New York, where the winner arrived 9 days, 20 hours and 2 minutes after the start of the race.

There were four participants in the race, one of them being the organizer. In 1983 the race was renamed as "Race Across America" or "RAAM" and the participants had to undergo qualifying tests.
2. To win the Race Across America, what route do the riders complete?

Answer: Ride from the West to East coast of America

The RAAM is an endurance bicycle race across the United States. The route may change but the direction is always from West coast to East coast of the United States. It is a 3,000 mile course that crosses state borders, mountain ranges, plains, deserts and rivers - among them Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio. RAAM is one of the longest cycling races in the world.
3. What is the main difference between the Tour de France and the Race Across America?

Answer: The Tour de France is a stage race and RAAM is a continuous time-trial

Once the clock starts in RAAM it does not stop until the finish line; the distance to be covered per day and resting periods for eating or sleeping are not specified. RAAM is a non-stop endurance. The Tour de France changes its route annually, but it has a circuit of about 2,300 miles and it is divided into daily stages that must be covered over about three weeks.
4. In 2017 the Tour de France was composed of how many stages?

Answer: 21

In 2017 the Tour de France had 21 stages - 21 day-long segments. The bicycle race occurs mainly in France, occasionally starting or passing through other countries, and always ends in Paris.
5. In what year did the first edition of the Tour de France occur?

Answer: 1903

The race took place for the first time in 1903; it has been held annually since 1903 with the exception of the years of the First and Second World Wars.
6. How often is the Giro d'Italia (or Tour of Italy) held?

Answer: Every year

The Giro d'Italia is a bicycle race held annually since 1909, with the exception of the years of the First and Second World Wars. The winner of the race wears a pink shirt that is the color of the sports newspaper from Milan -

7. In Europe there are three main famous races: the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espaņa, which was the last one to be created. In what year was the first edition of the Vuelta a Espaņa?

Answer: 1935

The Vuelta a Espaņa happened for the first time in 1935 while the other races date from the beginning of the 20th century. Since its creation the race has been suspended in several years due to periods of war (Second World War and Spanish Civil War) or economic problems.
8. Who was originally declared the winner of the Tour de France races held between 1999 and 2005?

Answer: Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong won all the Tours de France held in the period 1999 to 2005. However, in October 2012, the International Cycling Union, because of the involvement of Armstrong with banned substances, banned him for life from official competition and removed all titles obtained by him since August 1998.
9. After the original winner of the Tour de France between 1999 and 2005 was disqualified, the finishing positions of the other athletes who had competed in these tours was changed.

Answer: False

It is not true. The French Cycling Federation decided that there was not a winner of these races after the disqualification of Lance Armstrong and the finishing positions of the other riders were kept unchanged. So Alexander Züller, Jan Ullrich, Joseba Beloki, Andreas Klöden and Ivan Basso continue appearing on the list of results as runners-up.
10. What put Jacques Anquetil at the top of the history of the world cycling?

Answer: He was the first rider to win the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espaņa

The cyclist Jacques Anquetil was born in France in 1934 and died in 1987. He was the first cyclist to win the Tour de France five times, and also won the Giro d'Italia twice and the Vuelta a Espaņa once - making him the first cyclist to win all three events.
