Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You've gotten your ball and you are standing at the top of the lane. How many pins will you be throwing at?

Answer: 10

Though in the United States the most common form of bowling involves 10 pins, there are many variations that are played with different amounts.
2. The pins are set up in a triangle, and by USBC meet the specific requirements of a bowling pin. What is the required height of a bowling pin?

Answer: 15 inches

The USBC also states that pins are to be spaced 12 inches apart measuring from the center of one to the center of the other.
3. You pick up a ball, it weighs 9 pounds. That's a little too light so you grab an 11-pound ball. It fits perfect. What is the maximum amount of weight allowed for bowling balls in standard 10-pin bowling?

Answer: 16 lbs

The standard ball can weight no more than 16 lbs, and have to have a smooth surface.
4. On your first throw, you throw the ball and receive a zero because you fouled. What is considered a foul in bowling?

Answer: Stepping over the line at the top of the lane

Stepping over the line is only considered a foul if you release the ball. All the others aren't considered fouls but aren't highly recommended, especially dropping the ball on someone's foot.
5. If you foul on your first ball, you receive a second ball. On this ball you roll it and knock all the pins down, without fouling. This is called a what?

Answer: Spare

Even though you knocked down all the pins, it's still a spare because you have to knock all the pins down on the first ball in order to earn a strike.
6. Maybe your first frame didn't go so well, but you get better. After all you have ___ more frames to go.

Answer: 9

Standard 10-pin bowling is played with ten rounds or frames. However, you may earn two extra balls if you bowl a strike in the tenth frame.
7. With your first ball, you roll the ball and knock down 8 pins, leaving the 7-pin and 10-pin. This setup is call a what?

Answer: Split

A split is where all pins left standing are non-adjacent (not side by side). Though there are all kinds of splits, the 7-10 split is seen as the most difficult to hit.
8. In two consecutive frames you get strikes earning a 'double'. Then after that you bowl another strike, totaling three in a row. This feat is called a what?

Answer: Turkey

Hambone and clover would be getting four strikes in a row, and a tap is a type of spare.
9. After bowling 3 strikes in a row, your game takes a turn for the worse and you bowl an open frame. Which of these is an open frame?

Answer: All these

Though the true definition is not bowling a spare or strike in a frame, all these are acceptable as you would not score if you fouled twice or threw two gutter balls.
10. The game is over and unfortunately you were unable to bowl a perfect game of 300. How many strikes would you have to hit in order to bowl a 300?

Answer: 12

You would bowl 12 strikes because you get 2 extra balls if you bowl a strike in the tenth frame.
