Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who has never won both the US and British Open Championships in the same calendar year?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Jones was the first and did it twice. Gene Sarazen did it in 1932. Hogan did it in 1953, Trevino in 1971, Tom Watson in 1982, and Tiger Woods in 2000.
2. Who is the first player to win both the US and British Open Championships in the same calendar year more than once?

Answer: Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones in 1926, and his "amateur Grand Slam" year of 1930.
3. Who was the first player to claim victory in both the US and British Open Championships?

Answer: Harry Vardon

Harry Vardon, who claimed the US Open in 1900 in addition to his 6 British Open victories from 1896 to 1914. Vardon also participated in two other US Opens. Vardon and Ray lost to Francis Ouimet in the most famous playoff of all time in 1913, and Vardon finished one shot back of Ray in 1920.
4. Someone was the Masters champion in three consecutive years in the 20th century.

Answer: False

Willie Anderson did it in the US Open from 1903-05. Four people did it in the British Open, the last being Peter Thomson from Australia in 1954-56. Tom Morris Jr. won four consecutive British Opens, however it was over a span of 5 years from 1868-72. The Open was not held in 1871. Walter Hagen won four consecutive PGA's from 1924-27.
5. Which of the following was the fastest to achieve the professional "Grand Slam", starting with his first Grand Slam victory?

Answer: Tiger Woods

1997 Masters - 2000 British Open. Nicklaus 1962 US Open - 1966 British Open. Player 1959 British Open - 1965 US Open. Hogan 1946 PGA - 1953 British Open. Sarazen 1922 US Open - 1935 Masters.
6. Which of the following won the most Masters tournaments?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus with six. Palmer won four. Faldo, Player, Snead and Demaret all won three.
7. Which of the following won exactly 3 U.S. Opens?

Answer: Hale Irwin

Hogan, Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, and Willie Anderson, each won 4 U.S. Opens. Stewart and Strange each won twice.
8. Who won the most British Opens?

Answer: Harry Vardon

Harry Vardon with six. The other three won five as did J.H. Taylor.
9. Walter Hagen and which other golfer won five PGA Championships?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Sarazen and Snead each won three. Palmer, sad to say, never won the PGA.
10. Which of these golfers never won the U.S. Open?

Answer: Sam Snead

80+ victories on the PGA Tour, but none in the U.S. Open. If Snead parred the last hole of the 1939 US Open, Byron Nelson might never have won the U.S. Open. Instead, Snead made triple bogey thinking he needed to birdie the hole to win when par would have been good enough. Jack Fleck denied Ben Hogan his 5th U.S. Open in 1955 by playing the last four holes in two under par and then beating Hogan head-to-head in a 18-hole playoff the next day.
