Mountaineer Basketball 2004-05 Quiz

They started off 10-0 with wins over ranked teams that included George Washington and NC State, and they finished off the season 24-11 with some key wins over Pittsburgh, then went into the NCAA Tournament big under dogs and beat a tough Wake Forest team in double overtime by a score of 111-105 on their way to the Elite 8.

Beilein came from Richmond where he led them to a 100-53 record in five seasons. This season was Beilein's 27th year as a collegiate coach which gives him a career record of 478-287.

He led Martinsburg High to two state tournament appearances. He was first team all-state which he averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds a game.

They were the eighth seed, and they went 8-8 in conference play which tied them with seventh seeded Georgetown, but the Hoyas won the only meeting they played in the regular season 67-60, which was played on their court but it gave them the advantge in the tournament.

They started off the first round against #9 seed Providence and beat them 82-59, then they moved to the quarterfinals and played the #1 seed Boston College which they upset 78-72. They then moved on to the semi-finals against a dangerous Villanova team which they beat 78-76 with pair of free throws from Mike Gansey with 0.01 seconds left. Then they played Syracuse in the championship.

Syracuse dominated the tired Mountaineers who where playing the fourth game in four days. If the Mountaineers would have won, they would have been the lowest seed and the only team to play all four days to win the tournament.

Answer: Creighton

The Mountaineers played a tough game with the Creighton Blue Jays which started out the game on a 10-0 run, but the Mountaineers came back and with a few seconds left when they where tied at 61. The Mountaineers' Kevin Pittsnogle blocked a three-pointer and it went back toward Mountaineer Tyrone Sally, who ran down the court and dunked it as time went out and the Mountaineers won by the final score of 63-61.

Answer: Louisville

Louisville took the Mountaineers out in overtime by the final score of 93-85, but the Mountaineers fought hard. This was a team that had Francisco Garcia who was picked 23rd in the NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. Louisville lost in the Final Four to Illinois who ended up losing to National Champs UNC.
