Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these characters was NOT a Major?

Answer: Hawkeye Pierce

The main character of the show, Hawkeye Pierce, was a Captain. He was played by the incredibly talented actor Alan Alda, who received numerous Emmy nominations for his role. Alda also wrote and directed many episdoes for the series. He won Emmys for acting, directing, and writing over the eleven year run of "M*A*S*H".
2. Which rank did staff nurses Able, Baker, and Kellye hold?

Answer: Lieutenant

Over the years of "M*A*S*H", there were numerous nurses. The same names were used, mainly: Baker, Able, and Bigelow, who were all played by several different actresses. Nurse Kellye was played by Kellye Nakahara. All the female nurses were Lieutenants, except for Major Margaret Houlihan, the head nurse.
3. Which rank did Klinger have?

Answer: Both of these

Klinger started off as a Corporal, but was later promoted to Sergeant. During the first few seasons Klinger desperately tried to get a Section 8 by wearing women's clothing. Once Radar left as Company Clerk, however, Klinger took over his position, became a good soldier, and was eventually promoted. The role of Maxwell Q. Klinger was played by Jamie Farr.
4. Which of these characters had the lowest rank?

Answer: Igor

Igor, played by Jeff Maxwell, was a lowly Private. He usually did kitchen duty. Radar (Gary Burghoff) was a Corporal, and Rizzo and Zale were Sergeants. They were played by G.W. Bailey and Johnny Haymer, respectively.
5. Which of these characters had the highest rank?

Answer: Sherman Potter

Sherman Potter, played by Harry Morgan (who won an Emmy for his role, plus several nominations), was a Colonel. Colonel Potter had been in the Army since WWI. Henry Blake, played by Emmy nominee McClean Stevenson, was the Commanding Officer of the 4077th before Colonel Potter.

His rank was Lieutenant Colonel. Charles Winchester was a Major. He was played by David Ogden Stiers, who received two Emmy nominations for his role. Psychiatrist Sidney Freedman was also a Major. He was a recurring character played by Allan Arbus.
6. What rank did Trapper John McIntyre hold?

Answer: Captain

Trapper was Hawkeye's best friend. His character was played by Wayne Rogers until season three. At the beginning of season four, Trapper was sent home and was replaced by BJ Hunnicut (Mike Farrell).
7. Which of these characters was never promoted?

Answer: Hawkeye

Klinger was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant; Father Mulcahy was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain; Frank was promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel. Hawkeye, however, was always a Captain. He had no desire to rise in the ranks of the Army. He was one of the officers who was drafted, not regular Army.
8. Margaret's husband Donald Penobscott was a General.

Answer: False

Donald was a Lieutenant Colonel. Their marriage only lasted a season and a half. Donald was cheating on Margaret and in one episode, "Comrades in Arms", she receives a letter meant to be sent to one of Donald's girlfriends. This is the classic episode in which Margaret and Hawkeye finally get together, though it only lasts for that two-part episode.
9. Which character always insisted on being saluted because of his higher rank than other officers?

Answer: Frank Burns

Frank, wonderfully played by Larry Linville, was a Major. He strictly followed Army rules and regulations, and was always trying to get Hawkeye and Trapper court-martialed for something or another. Many times he complained to Henry Blake that Hawkeye never saluted him. Hawkeye, however, didn't even salute Generals, although he did salute Radar.
10. Was Margaret regular Army?

Answer: Yes

Margaret's father had always been in the Army, and she grew up on bases. She chose to enter the Army as a nurse, and worked hard in the Army before the Korean War even began. Margaret was played by Loretta Swit, who won two Emmys for her role and received eight additional nominations.
Colonel Potter was also regular Army, and had been since WWI.
