Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the first TV sitcoms was based on a mother who was the head of her household. Starring Peggy Wood, who would later gain fame as the Mother Superior singing "Climb Every Mountain" in the movie "The Sound of Music," what comedy show was later made into a movie starring Irene Dunne in the title role (though the TV show had a shorter title than the movie)?

Answer: Mama

While the movie version was called "I Remember Mama", the TV show, which ran from 1949 to 1957 on CBS, was called simply "Mama". Interestingly enough, some of the show's actors would go on to play other famous TV "parents" later in their careers. Ellen Corby would later go on to play Grandma Walton on "The Waltons," and Dick Van Patten would later play the Dad on "Eight is Enough."
2. The entertainment community has long had a fascination with fractured families--especially those where a man has to make do on his own. Which of the following protagonists and title combinations are NOT matched up correctly?

Answer: "Bachelor Father" -- Colin Firth

The star of the 1950s black and white sitcom "Bachelor Father" was actually John Forsythe, who would go on to greater fame by playing the "voice" of Charlie on "Charlie's Angels" as well as Blake Carrington on "Dynasty."

All of the other TV father figures are correctly matched with their series titles. In "Family Affair", Brian Keith was a bachelor uncle who had to raise his nieces (Cissy and Buffy) and nephew (Jody) when their parents died suddenly, with the help of his manservant, Mr. French, played by Sebastian Cabot.

Bill Bixby played a young widower with a young son on "The COurtship of Eddie's Father", though he is better remembered for his roles on TV shows "My Favorite Martian" and "The Hulk."

Eric Stonestreet and Jessie Tyler Ferguson became famous playing Cam and Mitch, a gay couple with an adorable adopted daughter, Lily, on "Modern Family."
3. Everyone knows that Lucille Ball was TV's wackiest early wife and mother. Her husband was played by real-life hubby, Desi Arnaz. On the show, Lucy and Ricky had a son, Little Ricky, who was played by their real-life son. True or False?

Answer: False

Though Lucy's pregnancy was real, and was the first one ever depicted on television, the actors who played Little Ricky were not Lucy and Desi's real son(s). The part was initially played by infant twins, Richard Lee and Ronald Lee Simmons (5 episodes), followed by twins Joseph and Michael Mayer (32 episodes), and finally by Richard Kieth for 24 episodes.
4. Another beloved TV couple was played by Robert Young and Jane Wyatt as Jim and Margaret Anderson. What was the show called?

Answer: Father Knows Best

Though the show was very popular in syndication, it was originally cancelled during its first season, and only a letter campaign by its viewers caused it to be saved. The character Jim Anderson was ranked as the sixth greatest TV father of all time by "TV Guide" in 2004.
5. Ward and June Cleaver were the parents on another hit from classic television of the '50s and '60s. Their sons were Wally and Theodore, but the younger son had a strange nickname that was part of the title to the show. Do you remember it? "Leave it to ______________."

Answer: Beaver

Barbara Billingsly and Hugh Beaumont played the Cleavers, who always had wise words and the solution to every problem for their sons, played by Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers. Barbara Billinglsy had a long career before and after the television show, with one of her funniest later appearances being that of the woman who could speak jive in the comedy spoof "Airplane."
6. Charles and Caroline were the parents on a show that was set in the 1800s based on the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It centered on daughters Mary, Laura (who narrated many of the episodes and was lovingly called "half-pint" by her father), and Carrie. The girls in turn called their parents Ma and Pa. What show was this?

Answer: Little House on the Prairie

Michael Landon, who played Charles Ingalls on the show and was heavily involved in the production, writing and direction of many episodes, had played Little Joe on the long-running western "Bonanza" before doing this show. His character was ranked the fourth greatest television father of all time in "TV Guide" in 2004.
7. What were the names of the characters whose last name was Brady on this hit show from the '60s and '70s? "Here's the story, Of a lovely lady, Who was bringing up three very lovely girls. All of them had hair of gold, Like their mother, The youngest one in curls." "Here's the story, Of a man named Brady, Who was busy with three boys of his own. They were four men, Living all together, but they were all alone." "'Til the one day when the lady met this fellow, and they knew they was much more than a hunch. That this group, Must somehow form a family. That's the way we all became the Brady Bunch, The Brady Bunch, the Brady Bunch That's the way we became the Brady Bunch."

Answer: Mike, Carol, Greg, Marcia, Peter, Jan, Bobby and Cindy

Though the show was criticized for being too idealistic and sugar-coating the challenges involved in blending two families, Mike and Carol were great parents and always there for their kids and each other. Robert Reed played Mike Brady, and Florence Henderson played Carol Brady. At the time, Reed was very unhappy with the caliber of the writing and threatened to leave the show several times. This dissatisfaction never showed in his acting, however.

The incorrect answers incorporated the names of the Beatles, the Monkees or other characters on the show (like Alice the maid, Sam the Butcher, etc.) along with some of the names of the Brady family members.
8. Tim Taylor was the father of three boys on the 1990s show "Home Improvement." What was the name of his wife on the show, who was played by Patricia Richardson?

Answer: Jill

Jill Taylor was a very smart, feminine character, which sometimes caused conflict with Tim, since their interests were so different. She wasn't the best cook, but she cared about her family. She was majoring in psychology and would often try and play matchmaker with some of the other characters, like Al and Wilson.

Patricia Richardson was born in 1951 in Bethesda, Maryland. Her role on "Home Improvement" earned her several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She also had roles in "The West Wing" and "Strong Medicine".
9. Who doesn't remember "The Cosby Show" (1984-1992), a heart-warming comedy led by parents Cliff and Clair Huxtable, played by Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad? The Huxtables were professionals who were raising their children and longing for the time when they could be living on their own again as a couple with no kids in the house. Cosby and Rashad later starred in a show together as just such a couple. What was it called?

Answer: Cosby

In the second show, "Cosby," which ran from 1996 to 2000, Cosby and Rashad played Hilton and Ruth Lucas, a couple going through a change when Hilton was forced by his employer to retire. His wife had trouble with him always being at home and so did he.
10. Not all TV families are idealized. What show about the dysfunctional Bundy family made many laugh in the '80s and '90s?

Answer: Married With Children

Al Bundy, played by Ed O'Neill, was a downtrodden and boorish shoe salesman who hated his life. His wife Peggy, played by Katy Sagal, was lazy and more than a little dishonest. Their son, Bud, was an awkward teen who was girl-crazy and ill-equipped to approach them. Ironically, their daughter Kelly, played by Christina Applegate, was a beautiful and dimwitted promiscuous girl.

The show aired from 1987 to 1997 and had many loyal fans.
