Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In episode 22 of season 8, Woody revealed his middle name. What middle name was shared by Woody and Captain James Kirk that was also the name of a Roman emperor?

Answer: Tiberius

Woody revealed his name to be Woodrow Tiberius Boyd, a middle name he shared with Capt. James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise. In the episode Kelly was about to leave for Europe for a year of studies and Woody wanted to give her a promise ring so she wouldn't forget him. Woody told Sam and Carla he wanted to make Kelly Mrs. Woodrow Tiberius Boyd to which Carla made some comment about his middle name Tiberius. Woody then said he hadn't told Kelly that was his middle name, but she shouldn't have a problem with it as he had accepted her middle name of Susan, saying it as if Susan was a weird middle name.
2. After Nicholas Colasanto, who played Coach, passed away at the end of season 3, a photo of which Native American leader was kept on the set in remembrance of him? (This leader was an Apache and the last leader to end hostilities against the US.)

Answer: Geronimo

In the beginning of season 9, "Cheers" celebrated its 200th episode with a special double episode that brought together current and former cast members, along with the creators and writers of the show. During this episode it was revealed that the picture of Geronimo that was on the wall in the piano nook was one of Nicholas Colasanto's favorite pictures in his dressing room and it had been placed there after his death.

In the final scene of the series, Sam went and adjusted the picture as one last tribute to the man who brought Coach to life.
3. In episode 8 of season 7 Woody, Cliff, and Norm decided to go sky diving after watching a particularly inspiring action movie. Can you name the movie whose theme they entered the bar humming? (It starred Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Robert Vaughan, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz.)

Answer: The Magnificent Seven

The three guys came into the bar humming the theme from "The Magnificent Seven". (The clue was that seven actors were listed as starring in the movie.) The guys went on to bemoan the fact that men don't have the opportunity to prove themselves like they did in the Old West.

A skydiving instructor happened to be there and challenged the guys to go skydiving. They agreed, but then chickened out the next day when it came time to jump from the airplane. They went back to the bar and lied about making the jump and guilt consumed Woody.

They decided to go back with Sam the next day but again everyone chickened out. Finally they returned to the field a third time and this time everyone jumped, Woody leading the way because he could no longer stand the guilt.
4. Cheers had a wooden Indian statue standing at the front door. What name did the statue share with a famous Native American war chief and was also William Sherman's middle name?

Answer: Tecumseh

In episode 21 of season 8, the wooden Indian statue, Tecumseh, disappeared one day from the entrance to the bar. Because it was almost Saint Patrick's Day, the gang assumed Gary had stolen it. In retaliation, Sam, Norm, and Cliff padlocked Gary's and then placed toxic signs and police tape around the building so that no one would go there on Saint Patrick's Day, one of the busiest bar days of the year. Later on, they learned that Rebecca had sent Tecumseh out to be re-varnished and Gary had nothing to do with it. The guys decided to try to appease Gary rather than wait for the inevitable reprisal by shaving their heads so that each one had one of the letters of Gary's name on their heads. After they had done this, Rebecca told them Gary was in Florida for the last month or so and that he didn't even know about the prank the guys had played on his bar. Then Carla noticed that Sam had something funny on his head and realized it was a skull cap. Sam had not really shaved his head like the others. The episode ended with the guys chasing after Sam to shave his head.

The Tecumseh statue was actually a cigar store Indian, the statues that cigar stores had been using for centuries to identify themselves- much like the red and white barber pole for barbershops or the three gold balls for pawnbrokers. Tecumseh himself was a Shawnee war chief who fought against William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
5. In episode 12 of season 7, Cliff revealed the song that he considered the most moving song of all time. What patriotic song was this that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in 1966? (Hint: current events in 1966)

Answer: Ballad of the Green Berets

In 1966 the US involvement in Vietnam was ramping up and SSgt. Barry Salder released "Ballad of the Green Berets". The song spent five weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and then was used in the 1968 John Wayne film "The Green Berets".

Early in the episode, Cliff had revealed that he thought the song was the most moving song of all time. At the end of the episode, when he was about to leave Boston to go to Canada to be with his girlfriend, the guys in the bar started humming the tune from the song. As Cliff heard the music he changed his mind and told his girlfriend he had to stay in Boston and deliver the mail like a true patriot.
6. Throughout the series Carla was obsessed with which hip swiveling singer? (Any other clue would give it away.)

Answer: Elvis

In the beginning of Elvis' career, they would only show him from the waist up on TV because the networks considered his hip swiveling to be too provocative.

Throughout the series, Carla mentioned her love of the king and even went on vacations to Graceland. She even named one of her twins with Eddie Lebec Elvis. In episode 13 of season 10, Carla celebrated Elvis' birthday, a fact not lost on her paramour at the time John Allen Hill. He sent her flowers from the king and then got a wig so he could look like Elvis.
7. In episode 19 of season 9, Norm's real first name was revealed. What name did he share with a US Secretary of State and a US First Lady?

Answer: Hillary

Norm's real first name was Hillary, a name he shares with Hillary Clinton, the 44th US First Lady and 67th US Secretary of State.

In the episode, Vera lost her job at the travel agency and Rebecca helped her get a job as Melville's hat check girl. Norm was spooked about having his wife working upstairs. Rebecca came down and said Vera was working out real well up there and that she had told some funny stories about Norm. She then asked Norm why he never told everyone his real first name was Hillary. They all gave him a hard time about it and he said he was named after his grandfather who had killed a man for making fun of his name.
8. During the run of the show there was one song that made Rebecca's "knees turn to butter" and the singer(s) made several appearances on the show because of it. Which song was it?

Answer: "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers

In episode 12 of season 7, Sam was looking for a way to get Rebecca into bed when Frasier suggested that everyone had a sensory trigger that put them in the mood. Sam tried to find out if Rebecca had one and she revealed to him that she did and that it was a song, but would tell him no more. Sam called her mother and learned that the song that turned Rebecca on was "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.

In episode 15 of season 8, Robin Colcord brought Bill Medley to the bar to serenade Rebecca with the song.

In episode 16 of season 8, Medley returned to the bar to kill the time until his flight left. While there, Woody asked him why he changed his name from Righteous. In episode 15 of season 9, Robin had Bobby Hatfield sing at his and Rebecca's wedding.

He sang "Unchained Melody" as Rebecca walked down the aisle but Sam had him switch to "We've Got Tonight" to remind Rebecca that she had decided the night before she didn't love Robin. The trick worked and Rebecca walked out on the wedding.
9. One of the main actors on the show had his/her real-life father play a background role, Phil, on the show for seven seasons. Which main actor was this, who also had a sister who was a writer and producer on the show during the first few seasons?

Answer: Rhea Perlman

Rhea Perlman's father, Phil Perlman, played Phil on the show, appearing in the background as early as season 4. He got his first lines in season 6 and throughout the rest of the series would from time to time have one liners. He is credited with appearing in 26 episodes on Imdb, but he appeared in many more than that. Rhea's sister, Heide Perlman, was credited with writing or co-writing 17 episodes and producing 26 episodes.

Heide also was credited as a writer and producer on the "Cheers" spin-off "Frasier".
10. In episode 7 of season 9, after spending the day in the bar with his father Frasier, 11 month-old Frederick spoke his first word. What was his first word? (Consider one of the most time honored traditions of Cheers and the answer will be apparent.)

Answer: Norm

Lilith and Frasier decided Frederick had not spoken yet because they were not spending enough time with him. Lilith agreed to stay home with Frederick but had problems adapting, so Frasier took over. Frasier took Frederick with him to the bar and spent the day there. Lilith caught Frasier at the bar with Frederick and was quite angry.

As she was scolding Frasier, Norm walked in and, as is the custom in the bar, Frederick called out "Norm!". Sam and Frasier looked at each other stunned at Frederick's first word, but Lilith was ecstatic because she heard Frederick say "Mommy" not "Norm".
