From the episode "Bed and Breakdown". Mama decides to take in boarders during the Tri-State Fair to earn money for a new stove. Unfortunately, Mama, Bubba and Naomi all rent Bubba's room at the same time. Mama rents it to the Thornberry's, a rather snobbish couple; Naomi to her boss' nephew (with his prize pig "Peggy Sue"); and Bubba to a group of cheerleaders.

It's decided that all can stay. The cheerleaders get Bubba's room, the Thornberry's get Mama's room and the nephew and "Peggy Sue" get the basement.

The family will sleep in the living room. At Iola's suggestion, they draw to see who sleeps on the sofa, the sleeping bag, the chaise lounge or the hammock. Poor Mama draws the hammock with hilarious results! "Peggy Sue" eats Mrs. Thornberry's prize orchid and the cheerleaders are scared to death when Mr. Thornberry enters their room by mistake, so they all check out in the middle of the night and Mama doesn't get her new stove after all!

From the episode "An Ill Wind". It's Thanksgiving day, and the Harper family, Aunt Effie and Iola are trapped in the basement because a tornado hit Raytown. They think that there has been damage to the house, but in reality, the back door blew open, pushing the ironing board against the basement door, blocking them in.

Answer: "you could carve a gun and shoot your way out!"

Also from "An Ill Wind." They eventually do find an ax and chop through the basement door to get out!

This is from "Flaming Forties". Buzz and Sonya are in charge of the dance to raise funds for a new gym at the high school. At first, they were going to do a USO theme, but the idea was voted down, and they decided on a Punk Rock theme instead. But the band "Medication" was arrested, and Mama saves the dance by playing her old 1940's era records and the kids actually enjoy it!

From "The Wedding, Part One". Ellen, Naomi, Fran, Sonya and Mama are decorating the living room for Naomi and Vint's wedding. While Vint and Buzz are at the bachelor party, the women are trying to have fun at home. They start talking about Eunice wanting to sing at the wedding, and how disastrous that would be. Eunice had just arrived, coming in through the back door, and hears everything.

It all ends up in a big fight.

Answer: "Oh hell, honey, I'd have given him bus fare!"

This is also from "The Wedding, Part One". Ellen suspects her husband Bruce is having an affair with his secretary Peggy. Naomi, Fran and Mama try to convince her that it isn't true, but Eunice blabs the whole thing after hearing Ellen making fun of her singing.

Answer: "Oh yeah? How do you feel about one cheap one?"

From "Santa Mama". Mama wants nothing to do with Christmas at first. She seems to have lost her Christmas spirit, especially since the star that Carl had made for her on their first Christmas together is missing. Vint was supposed to play Santa Claus at the Raytown Mall, but develops laryngitis at the last minute, so Mama takes his place.

In a very touching scene, she finally gets her Christmas spirit back when she meets a little girl who asks for gifts for her brother and parents, but nothing for herself. Mama gets it out of the girl that she wants a doll.

When the family arrives home, the missing star is on top of the tree. Mama figures that Carl's spirit found it a put it there to wish her a Merry Christmas.

Answer: "That was a Cabbage Patch doll in a toy store window!"

This is from "Mama Learns to Drive." Mama wants to go to the Raytown Mall to buy a new hat, but the family is sick and tired of driving her everywhere, so they suggest that she learn to drive herself. I love it when she asks Fran, "What's the prindle?" "The what?" Fran replies. "The prindle!" Mama says. "PRNDL!" "Oh, Thelma!" Fran cries. "Those are your gears!" Anyway, Mama eventually gets both her license and her hat (after wrecking Ellen's Cadillac), but now, nobody will let her use their vehicles!

From "Fly Naomi". Naomi figures she can make more money as a flight attendant, so she signs up for the course. Vint is very unhappy about the whole thing and offers very little support. Mama helps Naomi prepare for her big test by pretending she's a passenger, but bugs poor Naomi to death asking for a "Wicky Wacky bowl". (One of those drinks with a little umbrella stuck in it.) Sadly, Naomi fails the test and washes out of flight attendant school.

This is from "Psycho Pheno-Mama". Vint, Naomi, Bubba and Iola are very excited about Madame Rita, a supposed psychic who can predict the future. Mama is suspicious from the start, and finds out that Madame Rita gets her information from the beauty shop where she works, and the rest from Vint, who drives her to the sessions at Mama's house. Mama pretends to go into a trance of her own, becoming "Esmeralda", a gypsy queen, and exposes Madame Rita as a fake.
