Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode titled "The Jinx", Barney Fife was playing checkers with Floyd the barber, and lost. Someone was standing behind Barney when he lost, leading Barney to label this fellow a jinx. Who was it that Barney called a jinx?

Answer: Henry Bennett

Almost everyone in Mayberry started to believe that Henry Bennett was a jinx. To nip that in the bud, sheriff Andy Taylor decided to take Henry along with him and deputy Barney Fife fishing in the opening day fishing sweepstakes. Unfortunately, the boat sank and the blame went to Henry. In order for Barney to protect against Henry the jinx, he recited a couple of things. One was "Protection from a Man with a Hex, said while reaching your right arm over your head and touching your left earlobe with your eyes closed": "Wink'um pink'um, nodamus rex, protect us all, from the man with the hex."
Another was: "Fly away buzzard, fly away crow, way down South where the winds don't blow. Rub your nose, and give two winks, and save us from this awful jinx."
Of course there was a happy ending and everyone decided that Henry Bennett was not a jinx after all.
2. What was the name of the church that Andy Taylor, Barney Fife, Aunt Bee and Opie Taylor, along with the rest of Mayberry, attended on Sundays?

Answer: All Souls Church

"All Souls Church" was also called "Community Church" by Mayberry residents. It was a Protestant church that was basically non-denominational. It was small, holding only about 40 people and was full every Sunday. The pastor was Reverend Hobart M. Tucker. For whatever reason, they sometimes called him Reverend Martin.
"The Andy Griffith Show" would sometimes change the names of characters and use the same actor in several different roles.
There was a choir at the church that Aunt Bee was part of. Clara Edwards was the organist and also directed the choir.
3. All "Andy Griffith Show" fans know the character of Goober Pyle. The first episode he appeared in was titled "The Fun Girls", from April 13, 1964 which was season four, episode 27. By what surname was Goober introduced?

Answer: Beasley

"The Fun Girls" episode was the only episode that showed Gomer and Goober Pyle together. Goober was introduced as Goober Beasley, but in all the rest of the episodes he was Goober Pyle, Gomer's cousin. Goober was known for his silly Cary Grant and Edward G. Robinson impressions.

When he did Grant, he would say "Judy, Judy, Judy" three times fast and it sounded nothing like Cary Grant would have sounded, if he had ever said that. For his crazy Edward G. Robinson impression he would say, "OK, you guys. Come on, you guys. All right, you guys. Beat it, you guys."
4. In season six, episode 21, titled "Aunt Bee Learns To Drive", she decided to buy a car. What kind of car did she buy?

Answer: 1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner

In this episode, Aunt Bee finally decided to learn to drive and buy a car. She bought the car from Goober Pyle for $295.00. Aunt Bee was played by actress Frances Bavier, who in real life, drove a 1966 Studebaker Daytona. The strange thing was that we were all led to believe Aunt Bee never drove.

In episode one of season one, Aunt Bee was getting ready to leave Andy and Opie, and go back home. As she was leaving, she got into an old pickup truck. Nobody else was in the truck. She must have already had a license because she was about to drive herself.

She did get in the passenger side but on "Andy Griffith", they almost always showed the driver of a vehicle get in the passenger side.
5. There was only one diner in Mayberry and it was popular. What was its name?

Answer: Bluebird Diner

The Bluebird Diner was where one of Barney's girlfriend's, Juanita, worked. She was more or less known as his secret love, whom he would call at the diner and recite poetry to, or sing a song. A man named Frank owned the diner. The diner would serve things like meatloaf, pounded steak, and chicken croquettes.
6. In the episode named "Opie's Group", which was season eight episode nine, Opie joined a garage rock band. What name did the band go by?

Answer: The Sound Committee

The Young Swingers was the name that Andy suggested. Syndicate of Sound and The Human Expression were actual bands from years ago.
As far as Opie's band, it was a four member band. Members were Opie Taylor, Clifford Johnson, Wilson Brown, and Jesse Clayton. The band had three guitar players and a drummer. Opie played acoustic guitar.
Opie's grades in school began to suffer so Aunt Bee asked Clara if she would talk to Opie to straighten things out. The end result of that talk was that Clara became a member of the band.
7. In six episodes of the show, a hillbilly mountain family led by Briscoe Darling would show up in Mayberry to cause a ruckus and play bluegrass music. Two of the Darling brothers were actually part of a real bluegrass band. What was the name of the band?

Answer: The Dillards

Brothers Doug and Rodney Dillard were members of the Darling clan. They were part of a bluegrass band called The Dillards in real life. The Dillards were incredibly good musicians. The incorrect answers were actual bluegrass bands. The Foggy Mountain Boys were founded by guitarist Lester Flatt and banjo player Earl Scruggs.
On the show, The Darlings were led by the patriarch, Briscoe, who had several sons and one daughter, Charlene, who would sing at times. She was a real pistol who could sing very well.
8. In episode two of season six titled "Andy's Rival", Andy made his famous Punch Supreme. There were four ingredients. Three of those ingredients were orange sherbet, root beer, and molasses. What was the fourth ingredient?

Answer: Tomato juice

There isn't much to say about Andy's Punch Supreme. This was the episode that Andy's girlfriend, Helen Crump, had a colleague from the school board in Raleigh visit her. He was in Mayberry on business. Frank Smith was his name. He had a PhD and outdid Andy when it came to anything. He even played complex classical guitar, which made Andy's playing seem amateur.
9. In the episode titled "Opie's Newspaper", which was episode 26 in season five, Opie and his friend Howie decided to put out their own newspaper which they called "The Mayberry Sun". It didn't sell very well. Barney revealed to the boys that he had a one-time column in his high school newspaper and knew how to get their paper to sell. What did Barney call his column?

Answer: "Pickups and Splashes from floor and pool by Barney Fife"

The first edition of the "Mayberry Sun" didn't sell very well. So, Barney had to put in his two cents, and told them they needed "hot copy." Opie and Howie took Barney's advice and started putting all kinds of gossip in their newspaper. They eavesdropped on anyone and everyone which resulted in total embarrassment for Andy and a few other folks.

They decided they had better get all of the papers back before Mayberry folks got to reading the gossip inside. Unfortunately for Andy, the preacher already read his copy and saw that Andy said that his sermons were "dry as dust." The preacher then used what Andy said against him, and got him to teach Sunday School for a month of Sundays.
10. Aunt Bee had a friend, actually her best friend, named Clara. What was the name of Clara's son?

Answer: Gale

Clara was married at one time and had one son named Gale. The first time Clara appeared, she was named Bertha Edwards. The second time she appeared, her name was Bertha Johnson. She was named Clara Johnson in her third appearance. Finally, she was called Clara Edwards, and that name stuck with her throughout the rest of the series.
