'The Andy Griffith Show': The Women of Mayberry Quiz

I have always been a huge fan of "The Andy Griffith Show", especially the first 5 seasons that were filmed in black and white. All of the questions in this quiz are from those episodes.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode "Banjo-playing Deputy" (season 5, #159), Aunt Bee reveals that she once lived in West Virginia. What town in WV was she from?

Answer: Morgantown

In this episode Andy shuts down an act at a carnival passing through Mayberry called "The Sultan's Favorite" because some of the townsfolk had complained about the risque nature of the show. Since that left 'The Sultan' out of a job, Andy ends up bringing him home to supper & they learn he is from Morgantown, WV and Aunt Bee says she used to live there also.

She also realizes she even knows his family.
2. In season one, the first of Andy's love interests, Ellie Walker, comes to Mayberry. What was her profession?

Answer: Pharmacist

In episode #6 "Ellie Comes to Town", Elinor Donahue appears as the lady druggist. She has moved to Mayberry to help her Uncle Fred run his pharmacy which happens to be right across the street from the courthouse. This show originally aired October 24, 1960. Ellie only appeared in 12 episodes all in the first season.
3. Even though she doesn't appear in the series until midway through the first season, Thelma Lou is cast as Barney's love interest. Which actress portrayed her?

Answer: Betty Lynn

Betty Lynn first appeared as Thelma Lou in episode #22, "Cyrano Andy". She was only in 26 episodes and her last name was never revealed.
4. Emma Brand was Mayberry's most notorious hypochondriac. She has also been known to be a jaywalker (Deputy Fife also ran her in once). Who was the actress who portrayed Emma?

Answer: Cheerio Meredith

This actress also shows up in a later episode as Emma Watson.
5. Even though she didn't live in Mayberry, she did come to town every now and again with her Pa and four brothers. She was the only female in the Darling clan. What was her first name?

Answer: Charlene

Even though she didn't appear until episode #88 "The Darlings Are Coming", she had her sights set on Andy from the time they first met. But in the end she married Dud Wash her longtime sweetheart. Charlene was played by Maggie Peterson.
6. This lady was Mayberry's leading socialite. She once gave a party that was crashed by Ernest T. Bass, who had come to town in search of a woman. She then called Mr. Bass a creature and sicked the law on him. What was her name?

Answer: Mrs. Wiley

Mrs. Wiley was portrayed by Doris Packer and first appeared in episode #113, "My Fair Ernest T. Bass".
7. Mrs. Mendelbright owns the boarding house where Barney Fife resides. How much rent does she charge weekly?

Answer: $6

Sounds like a good deal to me - except for the fact you can't cook in your room or have any light bulbs over 40 watts. Enid Markey plays the part of Mrs. Mendelbright and appeared in episode #104, "Up in Barney's Room".
8. This lady is Mayberry's champion pickle maker, having won the Blue Ribbon at the fair 12 years in a row. What is her name?

Answer: Clara Johnson

The episode was "A Pickle Story" (season 2, #43) and was one of my all-time favorites. Hope Summers portrayed Clara.
9. This lady was credited with the discovery of Leonard Blush, a singer who had his own radio program the third Tuesday of each month in Mt. Pilot. She was also Bernard P. Fife's vocal instructor. What was her name?

Answer: Eleanora Poultice

She once gave Barney an 'A' for breathing. Eleanora was played by Reta Shaw who appeared in several episodes as different characters. She was also in Don Knott's movie "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".

Answer: Aneta Corsaut

Andy and Helen would eventually tie the knot on the first episode of the spinoff series, "Mayberry R.F.D.".
11. This Mayberry lady is never seen on camera, but is referred to often since she is the town's switchboard operator. What is her name?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah was in the habit of 'eavesdropping' on calls, so naturally she knew almost everything that was happening in Mayberry. This was another character whose last name was never revealed.
12. This lady was married to Otis Campbell and appeared in several episodes. What was her first name on the show?

Answer: Rita

Once while having an argument, Otis swung a leg of lamb (Andy's favorite dish) at his wife. He missed her, but accidentally hit her mother right in the mouth with it.
13. Andy and Barney decide to try and help Goober get a girl (season 5, #147 "Goober and the Art of Love") to keep him from tagging along on their dates. Goober ends up asking out Lydia Crosswaith. Which of the following statements is NOT true about her?

Answer: Her father used to be mayor of Mayberry

Josie Lloyd played Lydia. She was also in several episodes as Mayor Pike's daughter.
14. The Morrison sisters were right at the top of "Mayberry's Most Wanted", due to the fact that they were operating a still in their hothouse. Opie accidentally discovered the still while gathering some flowers for his teacher. What were the sisters' first names?

Answer: Jennifer and Clara Belle

As the sisters soon discover, crime does not pay. Barney ends up smashing their still to smithereens in this delightful episode "Alcohol and Old Lace", episode 17, season one.
15. What was the name of the waitress who Barney would call on from time to time for a date?

Answer: Juanita

Juanita was never seen on the show, but often talked about. One early morning call from Barney found him "cock-a-doodle-doing" her. His way of saying good morning, I guess. However, Andy walked in unbeknownst to Barney, heard this, and wanted to check Barney's chair for an egg. So funny!
