Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When season 3 of "The Walking Dead" opens, how much time has passed since Hershel's farm burned to the ground?

Answer: Eight months

The audience is made aware of the passage of time by the fact that Lori, who was revealed to be pregnant in season 2, is near giving birth. Rick wants to secure a safe place for her to have and raise the baby. The third season used material from issues 13 through 39 of the comic book series and was filmed in Coweta County, Georgia.
2. Rick and his group establish a camp in season 3 at the West Georgia Correctional Facility. When clearing the prison, they discover a group of five prisoners: Axel, Tomas, Andrew, Oscar, and who else?

Answer: Big Tiny

Phillip Blake is the real name of the Governor. Shumpert is one of the Governor's guards, and Caesar Martinez is in command of his army.

The prisoners (Axel, Big Tiny, Tomas, Andrew, and Oscar) are introduced in season 3, episode 1, "Seed." At the start of the apocalypse, the prison was dealing with riots, and one of the guards locked the prisoners in the cafeteria, never to return. The prisoners have been living off the canned food in the mess hall ever since and are unaware that order has disintegrated when they're let out.
3. Which prisoner says, "I like my pharmaceuticals, but I'm no killer"?

Answer: Axel

Axel says this to Rick in season 2, "Sick." In "Dread Central" (November 30, 2012), Lew Temple, who played Axel on "The Walking Dead," described him as a "gregarious redneck Southern biker-type, who has a big heart no doubt." Axel later reveals to Carol he was imprisoned for committing armed robbery with a water pistol.
4. Rick eventually kills one of the prisoners, Tomas. Which of the following things does Tomas NOT do before Rick finally kills him?

Answer: Makes a crude pass at Beth

In season 3, episode 2, "Sick," Tomas demands to be let back into Cell Block C, while Axel tries to work out a compromise in which the prisoners will move into a different cell block if they get to keep half of the supplies and Rick's group helps them clear it. While clearing, Big Tiny is scratched on the shoulder by a walker. Because a shoulder can't be amputated, the group begins to discuss what to do with him, when Tomas suddenly and savagely kills his fellow prisoner.

During the clearing, Tomas also pushes a walker into Rick, but Daryl kills it. At that point, Rick's had enough, and he soon splits Tomas's head open with a machete. Andrew then retaliates by attacking Rick, who chases him into the yard and locks him out with the walkers. Oscar and Axel are the only prisoners to remain alive, and they end up joining the camp eventually.
5. Merle makes a surprise reappearance in season 3 of "The Walking Dead." He captures Andrea and Michonne and brings them where?

Answer: Woodbury

Daryl Dixon's older brother Merle, who vanished in season one after sawing off his own hand to escape a rooftop, was found by the Governor. He settled in Woodbury and has become The Governor's "hammer." In episode 3, "Walk with Me," he captures Andrea - whom he recognizes - and Michonne and brings them both to Woodbury. Michonne is suspicious of the Governor, but Andrea eventually establishes a sexual relationship with him.

The city of Senoia, Georgia was used as the location for the town of Woodbury.
6. Who performs an emergency C-section on Lori while walkers are overrunning the prison?

Answer: Maggie

Lori had a C-section when she gave birth to Carl, so Carol had been training to give her one if necessary. She'd been practicing on walkers and learning medicine from the veterinarian Hershel. However, because of the walker attack, Carol was not present with Lori when the woman went into labor. Maggie, who had not prepared for the operation, ended up having to perform the C-section with her knife.
7. Who finds Carol weary and dehydrated when everyone believes she is dead?

Answer: Daryl

The group thinks Carol is dead and even puts a cross in the prison's cemetery for her. Daryl lays a Cherokee rose on her grave, the same flower he brought her when he tried to comfort her as the group searched for her lost daughter Sophia.

Daryl later finds Carol's knife, and he hears what he thinks is her walker corpse lamely trying to open a door. He sits outside the door for some time, trying to muster up his nerve to open the door and slay the walker form of his dear friend. He finally leaps up, flings open the door, and prepares to stab, only to find that Carol has not been bitten or turned. She's still alive. He scoops her up and carries her through the prison so she can receive care.
8. Prior to performing his experiments on walkers in Woodbury, had Milton ever seen a person die and reanimate?

Answer: no

Milton Mamet, a scientist and researcher, first appears in episode 3, "Walk with Me," when he is given Michonne's two walkers to perform experiments upon. Milton was an only child prior to the apocalypse, a loner who telecommuted to work and never had a relationship. He never saw anyone reanimate or had to kill a walker prior to coming to Woodbury.

In season 3, episode 7, "When the Dead Come Knocking," Milton performs an experiment on a Woodbury resident who is about to die from prostrate cancer and reanimate. He enlists Andrea to help. He's trying to determine if trace memories exist after transformation. Andrea tells him, "There is no conscious mind. When they turn, they become monsters. That's all."
9. Who deduces where the prison is, goes there with a box of baby supplies, and tells Rick that Glenn and Maggie were abducted by Merle and brought to Woodbury?

Answer: Michonne

In episode 6, "Hounded," Michonne witnesses the abduction. Merle encounters the couple as they're scavenging for supplies for the newly born baby Judith, and he recognizes Glenn. When he takes them captive, Michonne gathers the supplies and brings them to the prison, where Rick encounters her. Though he's suspicious of her, he tends to her wounds, and she tells him about Glenn and Maggie's capture.
10. Who gives the Governor the layout of the prison in exchange for a chance to stay at Woodbury?

Answer: Tyreese

In episode 8, Tyreese and Sasha lead a group into the prison through a breach in the fence. They are reluctantly permitted to stay, but Rick, having a vision of Lori, yells at them and orders them to leave. In episode 11, "I Ain't a Judas," they end up getting picked up by Milton and brought back to Woodbury, where the Governor questions them and learns they've been in the prison. "Whatever we got to do to earn our keep," Tyreese tells him, offering to provide details of the layout to defend Woodbury against Rick's group, whom the Governor has told him is dangerous.
11. Who stabs the Governor, thus causing him to lose his eye?

Answer: Michonne

Michonne discovers the Governor's reanimated daughter Penny in episode 8, "Made to Suffer." The walker child is being hidden away, chained up, in the Governor's apartment. When the Governor discovers Michonne, she stabs him through the eye, which results in him wearing an eye patch for the rest of his presence on the show.
12. In season 3, episode 12, "Clear," Rick and Michonne return to Rick's home town to obtain weapons in order to fight the Governor. What character from season 1 do they stumble upon?

Answer: Morgan

Morgan was the first person Rick encountered after awakening from his coma. He was not able to maintain contact with Morgan through the radio he left him. When Rick finds him, Morgan has suffered a psychotic break after his son, Duane, was killed by his walker mother, whom Morgan could not bring himself to put down. Rick tries to convince Morgan to come with them. Distraught at having lost his son, Morgan refuses to join them and does not reappear again until season 5, episode 1.
13. Who asks Merle to deliver Michonne to the Governor?

Answer: Rick

In episode 15, "This Sorrowful Life," Rick decides, entirely on his own, to return Michonne to appease the governor, and he asks Merle to do the dirty work. Merle tells him, "You're cold as ice, officer friendly."

But as Merle drives Michonne back to Woodbury, he begins to develop sympathy for her, and he lets her go instead. Merle then tries to fight the Governor himself.
14. Who kills a young member of the Woodbury militia even after he agrees to lay down his gun?

Answer: Carl

In season 3, episode 16, "Welcome to the Tombs," a young man named Jody, who is part of the Woodbury militia, stumbles across Carl, Hershel, and Beth during the Governor's attack on the prison. Hershel tells him to drop his weapon, and Jody begins to lower it to the ground, but Carl shoots him anyway. This seems to mark a major turning point in Carl's life.
15. How many season 1 characters die in season 3 of "The Walking Dead"?

Answer: Four: T-Dog, Lori, Andrea, and Merle

Merle is shot in the chest in his battle with the Governor, dies, and reanimates. In season 3, episode 15, "This Sorrowful Life," Daryl goes to the meeting point and discovers Merle's reanimated corpse feasting on a body and is forced to stab the walker Merle to death.

In season 3, episode 4, "Killer Within," Lori bleeds out after her C-section while delivering Judith alive. She is then shot by Carl.

T-Dog, played by IronE Singleton, dies saving Carol in season 3, episode 4 "Killer Within."

Andrea dies in season 3, episode 16, "Welcome to the Tombs." She is bound in a room by the Governor, who stabs Milton Mamet and throws him inside, believing Milton will turn and then kill her. Although Milton tries to talk her through escaping as he dies, Andrea doesn't make it quite in time, and she is bitten. Andrea shoots herself in the head to prevent herself from reanimating.

All four characters were introduced in season 1 and were at one time inhabitants of the first camp in the Atlanta quarry. Season 3 sees many other deaths as well. All five of the prisoners discovered at the start of the season die by the end of it. So do several members of the Woodbury militia.
