Question 1 of 10
1. I want to travel to San Andreas. I can drive around, steal cars, complete missions and listen to some tunes. My travel agent looks at me like I have just sprouted an extra head - "That place only exists in a video game you fool" he says.

In which video game franchise will I be able to visit San Andreas on the screen, yet not visit in real life?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The Italian region of Tuscany was the main location and setting for this video game 'starring' Ezio Auditore da Firenze. As the second game of this franchise, you will also be introduced to Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli. To which video game franchise does this game belong?
Hint

(Hint: there are no zombies in THIS game!)
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. There are several video games set in London, UK, (or are based on London) but the titles would make it too obvious to answer this question! This game (which DOESN'T have the word 'London' in the title) was first released for PlayStation 2 in 2002. Which game features the main characters Mark Hammond, Charlie Jolson and Frank Carter? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The next major city to have a slew of video games based there is Paris, France. Which video game franchise (with settings in Paris) has the sub titles: 'The Smoking Mirror', 'The Shadow of the Templars' and 'The Sleeping Dragon'? (Hint: possibly an unusable fighting implement?) Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Grand Theft Auto

'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' was first released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2. If you are into gang wars, theft, car modification and burglary along with drive-by shootings and improving your 'street cred' then this is the game for you. Maybe I'll do a little more homework next time I'm looking for a holiday....
2. The Italian region of Tuscany was the main location and setting for this video game 'starring' Ezio Auditore da Firenze. As the second game of this franchise, you will also be introduced to Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli. If I could find a decent plane fare I could visit this area tomorrow, but the purchase of this video game will get me there today! To which video game franchise does this game belong?

Answer: Assassin's Creed

There is more to this game than running around killing people (as the game title would suggest). Any good video game is full of side missions, main missions and great graphics - and the 'Assassin's Creed' franchise has all this in bucketloads! 'Assasin's Creed II' is the first of the franchise to go back to the renaissance period and is set in the Tuscan region of Italy.

It visits Florence, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni as well as venturing into areas such as Venice and Rome. Play a little further and 'Assassin's Creed: Revelations' will take the player on a trip to renaissance-time Constantinople.
3. There are a small handful of games I could play if I wanted to visit Sao Paulo, Brazil, from the comfort of my own home. The third game in which third-person shooter game franchise sees the kidnap of the wife of the main character's boss, the subsequent conspiracies, local gangs and (of course) a 'bit' of shooting? (Hint: there are no zombies in THIS game!)

Answer: Max Payne

The first of the 'Max Payne' series was first released in 2001 with the third installment ('Max Payne 3') released over a decade later. The 'Max Payne' franchise falls is a third-person shooter game yet plays like a first-person game where the player 'is' the main character (Max Payne) with the game centering around weapon-based combat. The difference here is that, although you ARE Max Payne, you aren't seeing through his eyes, you are seeing the character on screen as well as the view.

Of the incorrect answers, can you imagine Nancy Drew (teenage detective) in a beat-em-up, shoot-em-up game? 'Super Mario Bros' is based in a fictional world bearing no resemblance to real life. The 'Silent Hill' franchise is also a far cry from reality - unless you believe in zombies and alternate dimensions, and that real life is some kind of horror story!
4. 'Modern Warfare 3' sees the player visiting Prague during World War III and partaking in violence including shootings, assassinations, fist-fights and some bomb explosions. Which FPS (first-person shooter) game franchise, does 'Modern Warfare 3' belong to?

Answer: Call of Duty

There are several titles making up the 'Call of Duty' franchise, with 'Modern Warfare' making up a sub-franchise of their own. The First 'Call of Duty' game, aptly called 'Call of Duty', was first released in 2003 with 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3' first released in 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

And to think that my husband wants to take me to Prague one day...
5. The video game, 'Stuntman' allows a player (in career mode) to participate in several films - each in a different genre and location. Of the following real-life locations, which is NOT one that a player can visit in this game in career mode?

Answer: Australia

In career mode, the player can visit the following locations: London (UK), Louisiana (USA), Monaco, Switzerland, Bangkok (Thailand) and Egypt. Each location has a corresponding film, each of which is based on something you would actually see in a 'real-life' film - such as 'Dukes of Hazard', 'Indiana Jones', or a James Bond film. Stunts performed are similar to those that appear in these films.

'Stuntman' was originally released in 2002 for PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance.

Does anyone know when I will finally be able play a video game set in Australia?
6. 'The Last Revelation' is the sub-title of this video game which is part of a franchise of comic books, movies, novels and theme park rides based on the 'life' of archaeologist, Lara Croft. 'The Last Revelation' is set in Egypt and is the fourth video game in which franchise?

Answer: Tomb Raider

Although 'Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation' starts off in Cambodia's temple of Angkor Wat, the remainder of the game is set in Egypt where Lara Croft uncovers an ancient tomb which once imprisoned Egyptian God, Set. And what do you know - opening the tomb releases Set and impending befalls the Earth (who would have guessed it?). As is typical in one of these games, it's a race against time to 'fix' things before time runs out for Earth.

Hmmm, I think I'll be crossing 'archaeology dig in Egypt' off my bucket list...

Answer: The Getaway

This game is different in that there are two main characters (one on each side of the law) that are controlled by the player. Once all tasks are complete for each character, a free-roaming option is enabled.

Mark Hammond is one of the main characters and he's in a bit of a 'bind' - he is wanted by both the police and gangsters. Charlie Jolson is one of the 'bad guys' and head of the Bethnal Green Mob, and DC Frank Carter is the police detective working to destroy Jolson - although Carter's boss, DCI McCormack, is corrupt and helping Jolson.

All the incorrect answer options are set (or partly set) in London, yet neither involves the characters listed.

Trip to London anyone?
8. The next major city to have a slew of video games based there is Paris, France. Which video game franchise (with settings in Paris) has the sub titles: 'The Smoking Mirror', 'The Shadow of the Templars' and 'The Sleeping Dragon'? (Hint: possibly an unusable fighting implement?)

Answer: Broken Sword

First released in the mid-nineties, the 'Broken Sword' franchise was originally designed for PC and PlayStation. Later director's cuts and remastered editions were released for other game platforms.

'Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars' was the first in this franchise to be released. It followed an American lawyer (George Stobbart) who witnessed a bomb attack in a Paris café. 'Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon' (the third to be released) follows on from this story and is also based in Paris. 'Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror' is the second game and is not related to either the first or third games.

Ahh, the tried and tested story of Europe (any city, really) and the Templars - will it never grow old?
9. Moscow, Russia, is the setting for 'Red Alert 2' which, you guessed it, is from another video game franchise. But which one?

Answer: Command and Conquer

'Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2' is based in a ruined Soviet Union after an attempted conquest of Europe and invasion of the USA. It's possible (at a stretch) that this could happen yet the part with the leader of the Soviet Psychic Corps mind controlling people it starts getting a 'little' less possible.

'Command and Conquer' was originally developed in 1995 with 'Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2' released in 2000. 'Command and Conquer' is one of the franchises with several sub-series', including 'Generals', 'Red Alert', and 'Tiberian'. For a full list, check out the Wikipedia entry 'Command and Conquer' and see if you can figure out the logic of how the sub-series' and games works. Much too stressful for me, although a trip to Moscow isn't sounding much better right now...
10. Not all games have one single setting - that would possibly make them boring! Several of the games already mentioned in this quiz (both correct and incorrect answer options) are also partly set in New York, USA. Of the following options, which was NOT set (or partly set) in New York? (I'll give you the highest US military award if you get this right!)

Answer: Medal of Honor

'Medal of Honor' is the first in a long line of FPS (first-person shooter) games released since 1999. Most 'Medal of Honor' games are war-based with the main character having a bunch of missions and objectives to complete - pretty standard really! 'Medal of Honor' games have been released or many game consoles and PC with only a few titles being released on both PC and a game console.

It seems that New York is a favourite of both disaster movies and disaster video games (wars included!) What did New York ever do to receive this sort of treatment?
