Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Galaga' became a popular hit in arcades in its year of release in 1981. What company that would later become renown for its arcade game success developed the game of 'Galaga'?

Answer: Namco

The company of Namco was founded in Tokyo in 1955 as a toy company. In 2005 Namco merged with the Japanese toy company Bandai.
2. 'Galaga' is actually a sequel to a popular arcade game released in 1979. What was the name of the predecessor to 'Galaga,' a popular fixed shooter arcade game in its own right?

Answer: Galaxian

Like most other sequels, the core gameplay of 'Galaga' was very similar to 'Galaxian.' Both games have been big hits in arcades for over 25 years.
3. Which of the following is NOT a true statement regarding a player's spaceship in the game of 'Galaga?'

Answer: It changes in size depending on how many enemies are on screen.

The player's spaceship in 'Galaga' remains the same size throughout play. It is possible to obtain a double spaceship during a game of 'Galaga,' but this is not dependent on the number of enemies on screen. Since the spaceship moves much slower than enemy fire, at times it becomes a difficult to avoid all obstacles while solely moving laterally.
4. Arcade games from their conception have been broken down into individual rounds of play that players progress through. Which of the following describes the term that the game of 'Galaga' uses for each particular round?

Answer: Stage

In video game speak, a World is usually used to describe a location in a Platform, Adventure, or Role Playing Game. While the terms Levels and Boards are used in some action and arcade games, you will most likely encounter 'Stages' in these types of games.
5. Although some people engage in 'button-mashing' when they play arcade games, it is actually advantageous to learn strategies for each game. As you might expect, 'Galaga' is no exception. In the game, how many shots can a player have being fired on screen at a time no matter how often he/she presses the fire button?

Answer: 4

Two shots can be fired from each ship so if a player has a double ship four shots can be fired on screen at one time. Being able to fire only two shots from each ship encourages players to actually aim and plan their shots. A shot that hits an enemy ship will travel a shorter distance and thus will allow a player to fire the next shot quicker.
6. Which of the following describes the best tactic to employ to minimize your chances of being hit by an enemy ship?

Answer: You should move around often because an enemy's fire will go to the location you were at when it fired.

Enemy ships will fire at your current location rather than anticipate where you are going to move. One of the great innovations in video games has been the increase in enemies' artificial intelligence that will nowadays predict players' movements and act accordingly.
7. The most important 'enemy' in the game of 'Galaga' is undoubtedly the Boss Galagas. A Boss Galaga allows a player to obtain a double spaceship that allows for a boost in firepower. Which of the following is NOT true regarding Boss Galagas?

Answer: A player can use the Boss Galagas to recapture a double ship and form a triple ship.

Having a double ship in the game of 'Galaga' makes destroying enemies much easier. You should not let a Boss Galaga capture you on your last life because it will result in a 'game over.'
8. As with most arcade games, 'Galaga' offers special bonus rounds that help players accumulate points. Which of the following is a true statement regarding these bonus rounds?

Answer: The first bonus round appears after the second round of the game.

The first Challenging Stage appears after a player completes Stage 2. Enemies will arrive in sets and the objective is simply to shoot and destroy all of them. If you eliminate all 40 enemies on the first Challenging Stage you receive a 10,000 point bonus. On later Challenging Stages (the next one is Stage 7), it is much for difficult to eliminate all 40 enemies.
9. 'Galaga' is a game based on scoring as many points as possible. Extra lives are obtained by reaching certain point levels. At what amount of points will a player first receive an extra spaceship in the game of 'Galaga?'

Answer: 20,000

Twenty thousand is also the point level at which the High Score is set when a game of 'Galaga' is played for the first time (or its scores are reset). The 20,000 point level can easily be obtained after the first Challenging Stage (Stage 3). The next extra spaceship is awarded at 70,000 points.
10. The lowest point valued and most common enemies in the game of 'Galaga' award players either 50 or 100 points when destroyed. What do these enemies look like?

Answer: Blue and yellow space bugs

These enemies usually appear first on the screen and will normally fire two shots when attacking players. Depending on whether it is the first or second shot and how long the player has taken to destroy the enemy, 50 or 100 points are awarded.
11. Which of the following does NOT describe how the difficulty level increases in 'Galaga' as a player progresses in the game.

Answer: After the fifth round, Boss Galagas will no longer stop at the top of the screen before attacking players.

Throughout the entire game, Boss Galagas will stop at the top of the screen after making their initial pass. They will stay there for shorter periods of time as a player progresses in the game.
12. What type of animation is made on screen when a player's spaceship gets hit by either an enemy spaceship or an enemy spaceship's fire in the game of 'Galaga?'

Answer: The player's ship disappears in a white, smoke-filled explosion.

This sight is not a very pleasant one when playing 'Galaga.' The same animation is created whether or not it is caused by an enemy projectile or a collision with an enemy ship. When an enemy spaceship is destroyed the animation is less dramatic (they almost just disappear) which is a good thing because complex animations for enemies would likely slow the gameplay down.
13. After a player's game is over in a game of 'Galaga' a results screen is shown that lists three statistics. Which of the following is NOT one of those statistics?

Answer: Number of Misses

While the number of misses is not shown on the results screen, it can be easily calculated if you subtract the number of hits from the number of shots fired. Oddly enough, the results screen does not even show how many points you have accumulated during your game.
14. In my opinion, one of the best parts about arcade games is how they track high scores. Which of the following is untrue in regards to high scores in 'Galaga?'

Answer: The high score will not update during a player's game if he/she exceeds the first place high score.

The game of 'Galaga' will show the number one high score in the top center of the screen. If this score happens to be the current game's score then it will update as the player scores more points. Any score over 200,000 is considered a very good in a game of 'Galaga.' Arcade games for over 25 years after the release of 'Galaga' have implemented the same three letter input for a player's high score.
15. Unfortunately arcade games and even video games of today are not made without errors. What is the most well-known 'bug' in relation to the game of 'Galaga?'

Answer: If a player beats the 255th round, the game must be reset because the next round will have no enemies on screen.

A term called integer overflow is often cited as the reason for this error in the games of 'Galaga' and 'Pac-man' which both encounter major problems at the 256th stage. The other choices are not errors that are found in the game of 'Galaga.'
