Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joel journeys across post-apocalyptic America with Ellie, a young girl with apparent immunity to the infectious fungal outbreak, in which acclaimed 2013 game?

Answer: The Last of Us

Joel's daughter, Sarah, dies after an infectious outbreak begins to sweep the country (though she is shot rather than succumbing to the infection). Years later, Joel is working to smuggle goods in and out of the many quarantine zones that make up post-outbreak America.

The promise of bountiful supplies leads Joel to smuggle a young girl called Ellie to a rebel group, but the pair find themselves fighting to protect each other from all manner of hostile threats. "The Last of Us" was showered in plaudits and considered by many to be one of the best games of all time.
2. Though much of the game focuses on Scott Shelby as an adult, a pivotal plot moment sees players experiencing the origins of the Origami Killer as a child in which 2010 game?

Answer: Heavy Rain

More of an interactive film than a video game, "Heavy Rain" focuses on a quartet of characters and the overarching mystery surrounding the Origami Killer. Eventually, the story unfolds and the identity of the Origami Killer is revealed - Scott Shelby, one of the four central characters, leads a double life as a private detective and as a serial killer.

The game presents a flashback to Shelby's childhood, wherein his brother drowns in a torrent of water and his drunken father refuses to help. As an adult, this spurs Shelby to test the courage and love of fathers by kidnapping their children and sending a series of clues to their whereabouts.
3. Yorda is a young girl trapped inside a fortress, doomed to be possessed by the spirit of her mother to prolong her life, in which Japanese PlayStation 2 game from the early 2000s?

Answer: Ico

A masterclass in game design, "Ico" centres on its title character, a young boy cast out by his community for the horns growing from his head. He finds himself inside a fortress inhabited by demonic creatures, where he encounters a young girl called Yorda. Together, they try to escape, but forces conspire against them as it is revealed that Yorda's mother, the Queen, wants to use Yorda's body as a vessel to prolong her existence.

While Ico is able to wield a sword to fend off his foes, Yorda's presence can unlock the many magical gates that litter the fortress.
4. Link is tasked with retrieving the three Spiritual Stones as a child, before being sealed inside the Temple of Time for seven years in which "Legend of Zelda" game?

Answer: Ocarina of Time

In what is undoubtedly one of the highest-rated games of all time, "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" focuses on Link's perennial task of defeating the menace posed by the evil Gerudo known as Ganondorf. The game is essentially split between two halves, one with Link as a child and one where he has aged seven years (though later on, he is able to travel back and forth between the two eras at will). Within the series' convoluted chronology, "Ocarina of Time" represents a point at which the timeline splits into different strands as a result of Link's time travel - one of which sees Link having defeated Ganondorf and then being sent back to his childhood by Zelda, only now he is in possession of the Triforce of Courage and knows that to pull the Master Sword from its pedestal would create an opportunity for Ganondorf to assume power (whom he thwarts in his original timeline when he ages seven years); this version of Link is the one that goes on to feature in "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask", amongst other games.
5. An outcast child, raised away from the tribe of the Nora, Aloy is the central character in which 2017 PlayStation 4 game?

Answer: Horizon Zero Dawn

Although the vast majority of "Horizon Zero Dawn" is played from the perspective of Aloy as a late adolescent, the initial stages of the game focus on her upbringing, raised as an outcast by another outcast, Rost, and her attempts to ingratiate herself into the already isolated Nora tribe.

The game overall takes place on Earth in a far future, where nature has reclaimed much of the planet and sentient, animal-like machines are the dominant fauna. Aloy learns to hunt, defend herself and survive in this world that seems to be against her in all respects.
6. Baby Mario is at the centre of which 1995 SNES game, despite not being playable at all?

Answer: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Despite being labelled as a sequel to 1990's "Super Mario World", "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" is actually a prequel and serves almost as an origin story for gaming's most famous plumbers. The game is played entirely as one of many Yoshis trying to bring Baby Mario and Baby Luigi back together.

The game's cute, hand-drawn art style is part of its charm, as Yoshi uses his flutter jump, long tongue and egg-laying abilities to carry Baby Mario safely through a series of worlds to Bowser's Castle.
7. Hat Kid is the main character in the Kickstarter-funded 2017 game "A Hat in..." what?

Answer: Time

Hat Kid is a young alien girl, just travelling the stars in her spaceship powered by hourglasses. When her hourglass supply is depleted, she sets about collecting them all again, in an homage to platforming collectathons of yesteryear like "Banjo-Kazooie" and "Super Mario 64".

The game's development was funded by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, and even featured guest musical composition by Grant Kirkhope himself.
8. Luke Triton is the young companion of the eponymous character of which series of puzzle games?

Answer: Professor Layton

Luke Triton is central in the "Professor Layton" games as the apprentice to the titular puzzle-solving detective. Like Layton, Luke has a knack for puzzle-solving, though sometimes he does miss the smaller details that his mentor would otherwise naturally find. Luke appears in most of the series' games alongside the prof, as well as briefly in the spin-off anime "Layton Mystery Detective Agency: Kat's Mystery‑Solving Files" that centres on Layton's daughter, Katrielle.
9. In which series of episodic games will you find Clementine, a young girl trying to find refuge from a growing zombie threat?

Answer: The Walking Dead

Clementine is a side character in the first series of "The Walking Dead" and provides a moral response to the player's decisions (which gave rise to the popular meme "Clementine will remember that"), She finds herself amongst a group of other refugees seeking safety from the horde of undead sweeping the country, after her parents go on holiday and her babysitter succumbs to the zombies.

She becomes the central character in later series.
10. Ness takes centre stage in which SNES RPG, which was released in Japan as "Mother 2" in 1994?

Answer: EarthBound

In "EarthBound", Giygas, an intergalactic alien threat, has corrupted most organic creatures of the land, leaving Ness, his brother Picky and his neighbour Pokey, to stop him from spreading his influence further. However, Pokey is found to be in league with Giygas, and Ness is tasked with defeating both of them to save the world.

Although initial reviews outside of Japan weren't overly favourable and the game managed meagre sales, it later become somewhat of an overlooked gem, thanks in part to Ness becoming more prominent as a character by his inclusion in games such as "Super Smash Bros.".
