Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As in the movies, in the game Indy was accompanied through part of his adventure by a female sidekick. What is the name the woman who featured in "Fate of Atlantis"?

Answer: Sophia Hapgood

Sophia Hapgood, an old colleague now working in New York as a psychic, was reunited with Indy due to her expertise on Atlantis and her possession of an Atlantean artifact. The Sophia character later appeared in another game - "Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine" - but never appeared in the movies.

The three wrong answers were the main female characters that did appear on the big screen.
2. At the very start of the game, which character from the movies made a brief appearance at the Barnett College to start Indy on his quest?

Answer: Marcus Brody

Marcus Brody (Played in the movies by the late Denholm Elliott), the Dean of Marshall College who appeared in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", dropped by to introduce Indy to "Mr. Smith", a mysterious character with an unusual artifact that paired up with one in storage at the college. "Mr. Smith" was in fact a Nazi colonel, Klaus Kerner, and his theft of the item set the story in motion.
3. One of the first tasks faced by Indy was finding a book, which ultimately proved to be the key to finding Atlantis. The book was written by which ancient Greek figure?

Answer: Plato

The book was a translation of "Hermocrates", the fabled lost dialogue of Plato. Plato actually wrote "Timaeus" and "Critias", through which the Atlantis myth is known today, although he never finished the latter, and as a result almost certainly never began to write the proposed "Hermocrates".

However, in the game it not only existed, but was gathering dust only a few yards from Indy's office, amongst the shelves of the college where he worked!
4. The story of the game begins in New York State and ends in Atlantis, but Indy visited many locations across the world on his quest to find the location of the lost city. Which of these places did Indy NOT visit?

Answer: Berlin

Indy visited a near-abandoned archeological dig in Iceland, a collector in Monte Carlo, and an antiquarian in Algiers, but did not visit Berlin. The search for Atlantis also took Indy to a Mayan Temple in Guatemala, the Azores, and the Greek islands of Crete and Thera (Also known as Santorini).

The eruption of a volcano on Santorini around 3,600 years ago is suspected by some to be the inspiration of the Atlantis myth.
5. One of the most interesting features about this game was that it could be played in several different ways, with noticeably different paths being taken depending on how you chose to play. At one point in the game, the player must choose how he wants to proceed. Which of these was NOT one of the ways to beat the game?

Answer: With a gun

Indy can choose to team up with Sophia (Using her as the solution to many problems), rely on his wits (With tougher puzzles), or punch his way to Atlantis (With fewer puzzles, but many fistfights). There are several guns in this game, but they belong to the Nazi soldiers.

The only weapon Indy used in the game was his trusty Bullwhip, at one point using it to chase a jungle rodent into the clutches of a problematic snake!
6. From the Ark of the Covenant to the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones has a history of finding what in reality is unfindable, so it came as no surprise that Indy eventually found the city at the bottom of the sea. Where exactly did he find it?

Answer: In the Mediterranean Sea

Plato placed the island kingdom 3,000 miles from Greece, in the Atlantic. However, it was deduced that he made a translation error, and Atlantis was actually 300 miles away, in the Mediterranean. The tenfold error later had dire consequences for the German colonel Kerner, who applied it to Plato's instructions for the Atlantean god making device.

Instead of transforming him into a god, it turned him into a tiny goat-like creature, causing him to throw himself into a pool of lava in shock.
7. In many adventure games from this era, it was relatively common to find uses for many unconventional items. Which of these strange inventory items did Indy use in "Fate of Atlantis"?

Answer: An amber fish on a string

As amber was naturally attracted to Orichalcum, the fish would swing around at the bottom of the string, before pointing at any nearby occurrences of the rare Atlantean metal, not unlike a compass. After finding a way to shield any Orichalcum being carried by Indy or Sophia being detected by it, using it was necessary to find a hidden door in the Knossos labyrinth.

The 3 wrong answers were items that Guybrush Threepwood used in the contemporary game "Secret of Monkey Island".
8. Throughout the adventure, Indy comes across many machines created by the technologically advanced Atlanteans. Although their uses vary greatly, they all have one thing in common - a mouth like opening. What must be placed in the machines mouths for them to be activated?

Answer: A bead of Orichalcum

The metal Orichalcum was used as fuel by the people of Atlantis, to power all manner of machines, including torches, trains, and automated sentries. The Nazi antagonists intended on using the metal as a fuel for their armies. Colonel Kerner saw the potential of using it to power tanks, while the scientist Dr. Ubermann envisioned it use in the construction of bombs.
9. One of the more involved puzzles in the game involved finding a way to distract something that was lurking in the depths of one of Atlantis' many canals, by feeding it a crab trapped in a ribcage. What aquatic terror was preventing Indy from crossing into the centre of the city?

Answer: A Giant octopus

According to Plato, Atlantis consisted of three concentric circles of land, separated by canals or moats. This description was faithfully reconstructed in the game. In order to navigate the inner canal, Indy required the use of a mechanical raft - but a Giant octopus laid in wait. It could only be bypassed by feeding it a trapped crab.
10. At the end of the game, the ruins of Atlantis were destroyed utterly. What brought about its second end?

Answer: A volcanic eruption

The eruption was triggered by Dr. Ubermann, the German scientist, who exploded after using the Colossus machine at the heart of Atlantis to convert himself into a being of pure energy. The closing credits rolled with Indy (and Sophia, if she survived) watching the aftermath from the U-boat.
