Take It All Trivia Quiz

I'm not much of an expert on video games, but most of them seem to consist of collecting various items and having to 'take it all'. This quiz is aimed at non players like me, and covers games that even we will have heard about.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First brought out in 1986, with many subsequent sequels, the action video game which featured the character of Link was entitled 'The Legend of' which of these?

Answer: Zelda

The 'Legend of Zelda' series was published by Nintendo, and had Link battling his way through various levels, collecting weapons and useful items on his route. Often, his task was to rescue Princess Zelda, a member of the Royal Family of Hyrule, the land where the games were set. Zelda managed to get herself kidnapped in most of the games, meaning Link had to fight his way through to the end of the game to release her. Among the games in the series is 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time', which came out in 1998 and has become one of the best known and most popular.
2. One of the earliest video games came out in 1981 and featured a giant ape, similar to King Kong. Instead of 'King', he was given the name of which of these animals?

Answer: Donkey

Donkey Kong was the villain of the game, having kidnapped a damsel in distress. She was given the name of Pauline in later versions. The hero was originally called Jumpman, who later became the well known video game character of Mario. The game was another issued by Nintendo, and was a platform game with the hero having to jump to the top of the screen, collecting keys on the way.

At the same time, he had to avoid obstacles, often barrels, thrown at him by Donkey Kong.
3. Featuring the character of Rockford, who had to collect diamonds while avoiding falling rocks and other enemies, this game came out in 1984, initially on Atari. Which of these is the correct name?

Answer: Boulder Dash

Rockford had to burrow through dirt, collecting diamonds on his way, and negotiating his route through falling boulders. There were also enemies such as fireflies, butterflies, amoeba and slime. The exit to safety was only revealed once sufficient diamonds had been collected.

The game was soon adapted for other consoles of the time, including the Commodore 64. Versions of the game have been released regularly, with one, named 'Boulder Dash Rocks!', coming out in 2007 for the Nintendo DS.
4. Another game to involve collecting items was released in Canada in 1983. It shared its name with which nickname for an Australian soldier?

Answer: Digger

'Digger' was issued to be played on the IBM PC, and involved digging tunnels through earth while collecting emeralds and gold. At the same time, you had to avoid monsters who would try to steal the treasure and/or kill you. An updated version, called 'Digger HD', was issued in 2009 for the PlayStation 3.

The other options are also Australian nicknames, with cobber being a friend, jackaroo being someone who works on a cattle station and a pommy being an English person.
5. The platform video game 'Super Mario Bros.' came out in 1985. Mario was one brother, but what was the name of the other?

Answer: Luigi

Mario remained the main character in the game, with Luigi only being played in two player mode. The game involved travelling through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue another distressed girl, this time named Princess Toadstool. While going through each stage, Mario had to collect coins and other items, while avoiding obstacles and attacks from enemies.

The game was originally brought out for the Nintendo Entertainment System, but has been adapted for most of Nintendo's subsequent games systems.
6. First issued in 1983, this video game starred a hero called 'Dirk the Daring', who had to capture a princess held captive in the 'Lair' of which of these creatures?

Answer: Dragon

'Dragon's Lair' featured Dirk as a knight trying to rescue Princess Daphne who was held by the evil dragon, named Singe. Dirk had to fight his way through various enemies to reach the damsel in distress, which seems to be rather a common theme in the early video games.

The game was the first to come out on laserdisc and the animation was done by Don Bluth, who had previously worked for Disney.
7. Even the most dedicated non-gamer will probably have heard of 'Pac-Man'. What colour did the enemies turn when Pac-Man had the power to eat them?

Answer: Dark Blue

The game first came out in 1980 and was one of the first arcade games to involve collecting items. Pac-Man had to collect a series of dots, while avoiding four enemies, called Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. After eating power dots, Pac-Man was able to turn the tables and chase the enemies, who turned blue when vulnerable.
8. First released in 1991 was a video game starring a blue hedgehog. What was his name?

Answer: Sonic

The 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series was published by Sega and was the main rival to Nintendo's 'Mario' games. Sonic also found his way into print, appearing in various comic books, and acquired his own sidekick, called Miles 'Tails' Prower, the two tailed fox. Sonic has also teamed up with his rival Mario, and appeared in the official 2012 London Olympics video game which is snappily named 'Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games'.
9. Which game, which came out in 1996 for the PlayStation, was classed as a 'survival horror' game, and involved Alpha Team being trapped in a mansion while fighting various mutant creatures?

Answer: Resident Evil

The game was set in Raccoon City, and Team Alpha was the second team to be sent in after Team Bravo had failed to make contact. Team Alpha discovered most of the members of the previous team either dead or dying, and that the mansion was full of creatures who had been exposed to the T-virus, which caused mutations. Various items had to be collected during the game, to assist in defeating the villain and to win the game.
10. One of the best known characters from video games was Lara Croft. According to the games she appeared in, what did she raid?

Answer: Tombs

The first 'Tomb Raider' game came out in 1996 and has been followed by numerous sequels. Lara Croft was a British archaeologist who had to find her way through various puzzles and problems to obtain all the artefacts for which she was searching. The game even made its way onto the big screen, with Angelina Jolie playing the part of Lara Croft in 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' in 2001 and a sequel in 2003.
