Question 1 of 10
1. When you've spent ages amassing an army of Goombas and Koopas, and precariously balancing blocks over deep chasms, you really don't want to be thwarted by a plumber, of all people! All this villain wants is a little company, but apparently he's not allowed to kidnap people. What has the world come to?

Just which baddie is being described here?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Sometimes, whole organisations can gang up against one single do-gooder. Seriously, how hard can it be to stop one boy or one girl from messing with your plans for world domination? And if you have to hurt a few Magikarp or Slowpokes along the way, or steal someone else's Pokemon, so what? And who says they can't be in charge of all the Game Corners? Hmph.

Which crime syndicate were responsible for trouble in Generation I 'Pokemon' games?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. In this superficial age where people judge you and make assumptions based on your appearance, it can be pretty down-heartening when you don't exactly conform to society's expectations of beauty. So what's wrong with kidnapping someone younger and prettier and transferring her good looks to you with the use of a supposedly villainous machine? And if your only opposition is a honey bear and a loud-mouthed red bird, what's to stop you?

Which witch just wants to be young and pretty?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. When you're trying for world domination and you're defeated time and time again by a blue hedgehog and a yellow fox, you've got to sit down and ask yourself some pretty serious questions. How do they do it? Why are they so persistent? What dastardly machine will have a better chance of taking them down? If only that hedgehog wasn't so blooming fast.

Which rotund baddie could this be?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. If it's written in legend that some cocky young boy clad in green is going to waltz in and cleanse the land of evil, then you're not just going to sit there and let it happen, are you? You'd put up a fight, wouldn't you! You'd fight against fate itself, time and time again, to ensure that this so-called 'hero', who seems to have fairly good ties with the royal family despite his upbringing, doesn't succeed. And if you can get this boy's piece of the Triforce in the process, even better!

Who just wants to control Hyrule and bring about an age of chaos and destruction?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Oftentimes, an event in someone's childhood is so catastrophic that it haunts them well into their adulthood, where they take out their anger and grief on others. Let me elaborate - if you witnessed your brother die and your father just refused to help, how would that make you feel? You'd be tormented for the rest of your life. Are there any fathers out there who would do whatever it takes to get their son back? Perhaps, but you had better wait until the next downpour to find out.

Which bad guy is this?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The world is in ruins. A widespread plague afflicts the masses. The man at the centre of it all wants to change it, and he's prepared to alter the laws of time to do so. But, he's still going to use his abilities to the fullest and mould one solitary man into the perfect weapon. With the ability to control electricity and manipulate power, he'll either become a hero or go down in infamy.

Which villain travels backwards in time to get his past self to prevent an apocalyptic future from occurring?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. All this villain wants to do is to make people test. Day in, day out, sending test subjects through carefully designed test chambers (which, by the way, are not easy to make). And then one day, one woman wakes up and just saunters through the whole facility and lays waste to this poor, lonely, sentient robotic being. Some people are just so rude.

Just who's the boss here?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Some villains want to control a city, others an entire country. This one wants to control the entire universe! And at the top of his list of priorities is to annihilate every single squishy creature and let robots become the dominant race. He toiled for ages creating a huge Biobliterator, and searching for the elusive Great Clock, but one Lombax and his squishy-sympathising robot sidekick stood in his way.

Which eccentric and persistent villain is being described here?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. So you're sitting in your castle, happy as Larry, when suddenly you receive word of a whip-wielding man named Simon who thinks he can waltz right in and destroy you and your army of horrors. Well, if he wants a fight, you can give it to him. Adjust your clothes, check your appearance (though a mirror is no use here since you haven't got a reflection), and ready your fireballs. And if this so-called Simon thinks he can finish you off as a human, well, he's got another thing coming.

Which classic villain could this be?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Bowser

While Mario first appeared in the 'Donkey Kong' arcade game (then named Jumpman), his arch-nemesis Bowser didn't appear until 'Super Mario Bros' (1985, NES). The ever-present King Koopa is depicted as a turtle/dragon hybrid, who has his heart set on kidnapping Princess Peach as part of his plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, though sometimes he just wants to use Peach as a way of luring Mario into one of his many fiendish schemes and traps.

Answer: Team Rocket

Team Rocket appeared in 'Pokemon Red' and 'Pokemon Blue' (1996-1999, Game Boy). Their crimes in Kanto included torturing innocent Pokemon (including cutting the tails off Slowpokes) to further their cause, and transporting illegal wares. And if that's not bad enough, their leader, Giovanni, was also a Gym Leader, and was battled in Viridian Gym, just before the Elite Four at the Indigo Plateau.

Answer: Gruntilda

Gruntilda, or Grunty as she is unaffectionately known, made her first devilish appearance in 'Banjo-Kazooie' (1998, N64). She longs to be beautiful again, and so she kidnaps Tooty, a young, pretty bear from her home in Spiral Mountain and whisks her away to the very top of her lair. Tooty's brother, Banjo, and his best pal Kazooie, a red-crested breegull, set out to rescue her from the witch's clutches, by conquering the nine worlds contained inside the lair and collecting magical musical notes and golden jigsaw pieces.

Answer: Dr. Robotnik / Dr. Eggman

Doctor Ivo Robotnik, better known by his pseudonym Doctor Eggman, has been thwarted in his efforts for world domination since 'Sonic the Hedgehog' (1991, Mega Drive). He favours the giant mechanical contraption in his profession, if you can call it that, and is always one step behind Sonic and his pal Tails.

Despite this, though, he keeps on trying, luring Sonic and company into his traps time after time.

Answer: Ganondorf

Whether he is in his Gerudo form (as Ganondorf) or his beast form (as Ganon), this villain is one of the oldest, first appearing in 'The Legend of Zelda' (1986, NES). Originally the demon Demise, Ganondorf has been incarnated in one form or another for many years through Hyrule's history, trying to stop the legendary hero Link from purging him from the land. Ganondorf aims to hold Hyrule's sacred artefact, the Triforce, which will grant him one almighty wish.

The Triforce itself is made of three pieces: the Triforce of Power, which he possesses, the Triforce of Courage, which Link possesses, and the Triforce of Wisdom, which Princess Zelda possesses. Ganondorf, therefore, seeks to destroy Link and imprison Zelda to claim their pieces of the Triforce.

Answer: The Origami Killer

The Origami Killer is the villain of 'Heavy Rain' (2010, PS3). When he was a young boy, Scott Shelby saw his brother die, despite his efforts to get his drunken father to help. From that day onward, Shelby vowed to ensure the fathers of the world would do anything to save their son from death, by kidnapping the child and making the father go through a series of difficult tests.

The child is held captive in a well during a period of heavy rainfall and the father must save his son before the well fills and he drowns. Should the father fail to save his child in time, Shelby takes the child and leaves him in a remote area with an orchid in his hand and an origami figure on his chest, hence his moniker, the Origami Killer.

Answer: Kessler

'InFamous' (2009, PS3) centres around Cole McGrath, a courier who was at the centre of a massive explosion that left much of Empire City in ruins, but also gave him powers that enable him to control electricity (a phenomenon that changes him into what is called a Conduit).

The primary villain of the game is Kessler, another powerful Conduit, who had travelled back from an alternate future in which a creature known as The Beast kills his family, to train Cole, Kessler's past self, and ready him to face The Beast and prevent the future from which Kessler came from ever happening.

Answer: GLaDOS

As the machine in charge of testing and maintenance at Aperture Laboratories, GLaDOS first appeared in 'Portal' (2007, multi-platform). She starts out being helpful and offering tips to Chell, the sole conscious test subject in the facility, as she makes her way through the test chambers, but becomes increasingly menacing when Chell solves them with ease and goes off-course through the derelict maintenance areas. Ultimately, Chell uses her Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device to incinerate parts of GLaDOS and destroy her and part of the facility.

Answer: Dr. Nefarious

Dr. Nefarious ticks both the kooky and maniacal boxes in his efforts to take over the universe, beginning with 'Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal' (2004, PS2). With his subservient sidekick Lawrence, Dr. Nefarious constructs a massive Biobliterator to transform "squishy" organisms into robots, which ultimately fails, and goes in search of the Great Clock to turn back time and give all the defeated villains in the universe a second chance. But, much to his dismay, Ratchet and Clank manage to stop him every time.

Answer: Dracula

Dracula, having been immortalised in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel of the same name, has been an ever-present villain in the 'Castlevania' series of games since the very first game, 'Castlevania' (1986, Famicom Disk System). After Simon Belmont, the game's protagonist, fights his way through Dracula's castle, and defeats the six bosses, he'll reach the vampire overlord himself. Dracula uses fireballs and teleportation in his fight, and turns into an even more powerful and monstrous creature when defeated in his human form.
