Frank P. O'Connor named the store after Laura Secord, a Canadian heroine. During the war of 1812, Laura Secord overheard plans about a surprise attack on the British by the Americans and walked 32 kilometers in over 18 hours to warn the British of the impending attack.

A peace treaty was reached between Canada and the U.S. the following year. There is a statue commemorating her at Valiants Memorial in Ottawa.
