Spreading from the northern portion of Spain, across most of the Pyrenees in the lower region of France, the land known as the Basque Country (officially referred to in most parts of the region as the Basque Autonomous Community) contains an interesting and rich culture. The Basque people have inhabited the area since around the Paleolithic era.
2. The Basque city of San Sebastían, located on the Bay of Biscay is best known for which of these accomplishments?

Answer: Its restaurants have won multiple Michelin stars

In the city of San Sebastián there are several world-renowned restaurants, some of which have been awarded with Michelin stars. San Sebastián was founded in 1180 and has a very rich culinary history. The city is located in the Spanish portion of the Basque Country near the Bay of Biscay, and has also become a popular vacationing spot.

Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, or ETA for short, which stands for Basque Homeland and Liberty, began as a group of people trying to promote the Basque culture. Unfortunately, the group eventually became more aggressive leading to a string of violent attacks.

Some of the attacks were very violent and were targeted at Spain. These attacks ultimately failed and the group ceased activities in September of 2010, after once again failing to achieve independence.

Tartaro lives in a cave and two boys decide to stop and rest while on a journey. He eats one of them and decides to save the other for later. The other boy manages to escape and blinds Tartaro allowing him to escape. When Tartaro chases him to get his ring back, the boy cuts his finger off and tosses it off a cliff. Tartaro runs off the cliff after his ring and straight to his death.

While the oak tree is a prominent symbol in the culture, the Lauburu or "four ends" is the symbol that represents the Basque Autonomous Community. The usage of the Lauburu is said to have begun sometime during the reign of Augustus Caesar.

The Ikurriña which is the Basque word meaning flag contains a white cross on top of a green diagonal cross over a red background. The green diagonal cross is said to represent the Oak of Guernica which is one of the national symbols, and the white represents the symbol of Catholic devotion that has been prominent in the area.

The most important part, the red background represents the race of people that make up the Basque Country.

In addition to French and Italian, Spanish, Romanian, and Portuguese are also considered Romance languages and are derived from a special form of Latin known as Vulgar Latin. The Basque language has always held a certain amount of mystery to it because it has no known ancestral languages and only takes bits and pieces from Indo-European ancestors.
