That number is also used to contact fire services, ambulance services and the Coast Guard. As well as 999, many police services have numbers for contacting police exchanges in non-emergencies. There are 43 individual forces in England and Wales, one in Northern Ireland, and a further eight in Scotland.

Until Ireland was partitioned in 1921, the entire island was policed by the Royal Irish Constabulary. After partition, the 26 counties of the Republic gained a new force, An Garda Siochana, while the six counties of Northern Ireland were policed by the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

The RUC metamorphosed into the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2001. Officers of An Garda Siochana, more familiarly known as Gardai (plural) or Garda (singular), wear blue uniforms. These uniformed officers do not carry weapons.

Some plain-clothed detectives are armed. Officers of the PSNI wear green uniforms and all carry personal protection weapons.

In 1920, the Royal Northwest Mounted Police absorbed the Dominion Police and become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). We provide a total federal policing service to all Canadians and policing services under contract to the three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and Quebec), more than 190 municipalities, 184 Aboriginal communities and three international airports."
