Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which US university is located in Ames?

Answer: Iowa State

ISU was founded in 1858 and was America's first land-grant institution. As of 2013, it was Iowa's largest university. Since 1959, ISU's full name is Iowa State University of Science and Technology, a change from the Iowa State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. It is especially known for Engineering and the School of Veterinary Medicine.
2. As of 2012, on the campus of which US university in the Big 12 Conference would you be if you found yourself in Manhattan?

Answer: Kansas State

Although it only had ten members as of 2012, the Big 12 Conference included both Kansas State and Oklahoma State. According to Wikipedia, KSU "has ranked first nationally among state universities in its total Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall scholars since 1986." Manhattan, Kansas, has been nicknamed "The Little Apple," with a tongue-in-cheek reference to one of the boroughs of NYC.

Although Lawrence, Kansas, home of the University of Kansas, is practically a suburb of Kansas City, Manhattan is 121 miles west of KC.
3. Where would one go to see the Cougars of Wazzu play a home game? Hint: "Wazzu" is a colloquial term for Washington State University.

Answer: Pullman, Washington

WSU also has campuses in Spokane and Vancouver, and at WSU Tri-Cities, located in Richland. WSU's closest college rival is just across the state line in Moscow, Idaho, home of the Vandals. In 2013 the football rivalry game between the two schools, known as the "Battle of the Palouse", was scheduled to resume since being dropped after 2007.
4. Notable alumni of this "State" university, featuring four letters in its acronym, include Earl Lloyd, the NBA's first black player, and Will Robinson, the first black coach of a Division I college basketball team, heading the program at Illinois State beginning in 1970. The campus is located on Mound Builder culture land granted to George Washington for royal military service, in the unincorporated community of Institute. What is the name of the school, founded in 1891?

Answer: West Virginia State

WVSU was originally founded as the West Virginia Colored Institute in 1891 and remained a black school until 1954. In 1957 it lost its land-grant status (as of 2013 the only land-grant college to do so), but regained it in 2000. It became West Virginia State University in 2004. Its athletic program competes in Division II of the NCAA.
5. Like Iowa State, New Mexico State began as the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, but unlike the Cyclones in Ames, NMSU's athletic teams continue their original traditions in their nickname of Aggies. Can you identify the city that serves as the home of NMSU?

Answer: Las Cruces

NMSU has branch community colleges in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Dona Ana, and Grants. Las Cruces College, which became the aforementioned NMCAMA a year after its founding, was established to teach agriculture by an Indiana-born educator, in 1888, while New Mexico was still a territory. New Mexico became the 47th US state in 1912.
6. Which of these American university campuses is NOT located in the state capital?

Answer: Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State is located in Stillwater, which is 65 miles north of Oklahoma City. All the others are in their state capitals: NCSU in Raleigh, FSU in Tallahassee, and "THE Ohio State University" in Columbus.
7. Which "ISU" has its home campus in Pocatello?

Answer: Idaho State

Idaho State was founded in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho. It was renamed in 1915 as Idaho Technical Institute and became ISU after having been known as Idaho State College since 1947. From 1927 to 1947 it was the University of Idaho--Southern Branch. Pianist Roger Williams is an Idaho State alumnus.
8. Another outstanding Veterinary Medicine school is located, according to Wikipedia, "in Oktibbeha County", and "partially in the town of Starkville and partially in an unincorporated area". As we have seen, like other land-grant colleges and universities, its name originally included "Agricultural and Mechanical College". Which "State U." is this one?

Answer: Mississippi State

Wikipedia says Mississippi State's Veterinary school is "the largest veterinary school in the nation under one roof". John Grisham is an alumnus of MSU, and the school is also home of Ulysses S. Grant's Presidential Library.
9. Which Michigan city is the home of the Spartans of Michigan State University?

Answer: East Lansing

MSU originated as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, with its first students attending in 1857.
10. From 2009 to 2013, Arizona State had the largest single campus population in the United States, averaging over 58,000 students over those four academic years. Where is this campus located?

Answer: Tempe

Tempe and Mesa are both suburbs of Phoenix. Tucson, home of the University of Arizona, is 118 miles southeast of Phoenix, while Flagstaff is 144 miles north of Arizona's capital. ASU was founded in 1885, 27 years before Arizona became a state in 1912. Because ASU was originally a normal school, or teacher-training institution, the University of Arizona claims to be the state's oldest university, although UA did not begin classes until 1891, while students were already attending classes in Tempe in 1886.
