Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the Italian word for an apricot?

Answer: albicocca

Una anguria is a watermelon, una arancia is an orange, and apricotta is something I made up.
2. What is the Italian word for a pineapple?

Answer: ananas

L'ananas is the French word for pineapple, and ananassa is something I made up. Cedro means cedar in Italian. On the subject of pineapples, torta all'ananas means pineapple upside down cake in Italian if you're ever in Italy and have a sudden craving.
3. What is the Italian word for a watermelon?

Answer: anguria

Another word for watermelon is "cocomero," but this was not an answer choice. "Melono d'acqua" was something that I made up for the purposes of this quiz. :)
4. What is the Italian word for an orange?

Answer: arancia

The correct answer is arancia - I made the rest up of the answer choices up with some inspiration from Spanish.
5. What is the Italian word for chestnuts?

Answer: castagne

Noci are nuts, datteri are dates, fichi are figs.
6. What would the Italians call a lime?

Answer: limetta

Limetta is correct - there is no such thing as a melono, and Lima is the capital of Peru.
7. What is the Italian word for cherries?

Answer: ciliegie

There is an Italian expression that I've heard from time to time, "la ciliegia sulla torta" - "the cherry on top of the cake," which is roughly equivalent to the English expression "the icing on the cake."
8. What is the Italian word for dates (fruit, not calendar)?

Answer: datteri

Fichi are figs, noci are nuts, mandorle are almonds.
9. What is the Italian word for figs?

Answer: fichi

10. What is the Italian word for strawberries?

Answer: fragole

Fagioli are bean and fazoli is a way to say fagioli in some dialects.
11. What is the Italian word for a raspberry?

Answer: lampone

There's an Italian dish called lampone pazzo, which literally translates "crazy raspberry." It's rather all purpose. You can serve it alone, top ice cream with it, put it on a cake...ah, the possibilities.
12. What is the Italian word for lemon?

Answer: limone

This is a real cognate, not one that I made up (although limona IS such an invention). Mandarini are tangerines.
13. What is the Italian word for tangerines?

Answer: mandarini

This perhaps comes from "mandarin oranges," which is another name for tangerines in English.
14. What is the Italian word for almonds?

Answer: mandorle

15. What is the Italian word for an apple?

Answer: mela

As far as I know, pomma is not a word, but un pomo di terra can be a potato (although I more often see patata used).

Answer: pesca

22. What is the Italian word for a grapefruit?

Answer: pompelmo

I made up pamplamossa from the French word for grapefruit, pamplemousse.

Answer: Mirtillo

"Gatto" is a cat; "aglio" is garlic, and "cipolla" is an onion.
