Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The British Isles had a long history of shipbuilding. In 2017, the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales was launched. Where had she been put together?

Answer: Scotland

HMS Prince of Wales and her sister aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth were the biggest ships ever built for the Royal Navy. Both were assembled at Rosyth, near Edinburgh, like a giant lego ship of parts made in other shipyards.

The build cost was £3bn. HMS Prince of Wales had a 900 foot fight deck; a crew of 700 and the ability to carry 36 F35B jet fighters, as well as several helicopters.
2. Many of the most iconic aircraft of the 20th Century were made in the UK. In which country were Rolls Royce aero engines being manufactured as the 21st Century opened?

Answer: England

Based at Derby in the English Midlands, Rolls Royce began making aero engines in 1915. One of its most famous was the Merlin, which powered allied fighters and bombers during World War Two.

Going into the 21st Century, RR was a leading manufacturer of jet engines for civil and military aircraft.
3. If you want to clean up, there can be few more characterful vacuum cleaners than the range with a happy smiling face on the front. Where in the UK is the home of "Henry" vacuum cleaners?

Answer: England

"Henry"cleaners were distinguishable by their round shape and a set of eyes. Around 4,400 were built each day at the factory in Somerset. About 40 per cent went into the export market.
4. Think computers and Silicon Valley and China spring to mind, but which part of the United kingdom was home to the Raspberry Pi computer?

Answer: Wales

About five million Pi computers have been built at Sony's plant in Bridgend, Wales.

The Raspberry Pi was introduced as a beginner's way into computing. Purchasers got the basic items required for a computer and put them together, adding their own keyboards and monitors.

The computer parts ran the preparatory operating system Raspbian, although a Microsoft 10 capable variant was added.
5. Home of the world's oldest distillery, in which part of the UK was Bushmills whiskey produced?

Answer: Northern Ireland

The distillery at Bushmills in Co Antrim was granted a licence by King James I in 1608.

Much of the whiskey was sold to markets on the European continent and in the USA.
6. For centuries, people living on remote islands in the United Kingdom produced the high quality Harris Tweed. In which part of the UK was it made?

Answer: Scotland

In the early 19th Century, crofters on the islands of Harris and Lewis span wool from their own sheep to make clothes to suit their often inhospitable climate. From the 1830s, that began to spread throughout the rest of the nation.

Going into the 21st Century, Harris Tweed was known throughout the world as a luxury and, and many more items than just clothing were made. Under Trade Mark laws, only items made in specified locations can be called Harris Tweed.
7. If you are a motorist and like the wind in your hair, there can by no more iconic vehicle than a Caterham car. In which part of the United Kingdom are they built?

Answer: England

Caterham cars looked like a throwback to a former age of motoring. Low-slung, sporty and, by design open-topped, they were built in Sussex.

The company was founded in 1973 and named after the town of Caterham in Surrey. Initially the design was based on the very successful Lotus 7.

As well as hand built factory cars, Caterhams were supplied as a kit that a skilful mechanic could build in about 100 hours.
8. From the 17th Century onwards, many places in the British Isles produced bespoke pottery and tableware. Going into the 21st Century, in which part in the UK was Belleek Pottery still being made?

Answer: Northern Ireland

Pottery was first made in the Fermanagh village of Belleek in 1849. The brand name Belleek Pottery dates to 1857.

The company remained in production into the 21st Century, with designs reminiscent of its past. As well as buying products, visitors could go to the pottery to see them produced.
9. Toss a coin if you have to: which part of the United Kingdom is home to the Royal Mint, producer of coins for many nations around the world?

Answer: Wales

At the start of the 21 Century, the Royal Mint at Pontyclun in South Wales was making all of the United Kingdom's coins, as well as about 15 per cent of those used in other countries. The organisation was founded in 886AD and was claimed to be "Britain's oldest manufacturing organisation."

As well as coins that were in circulation as currency, the Mint made commemorative coins of historical events. Visitors could tour the manufacturing site to see the five billion coins a year being produced.
10. Like it or loathe it: Marmite has a taste all of its own. In what part of the UK was it traditionally made?

Answer: England

Around 6,000 tons of Marmite are made each year in Burton-Upon-Trent in Staffordshire. It was first produced there in 1902 and the basic ingredient is yeast sludge, a by-product from brewing beer, a product the town was synonymous with for decades.

The manufacturers made much of the fact that probably as many people said they loathed Marmite as said they liked it. It was certainly a British taste, with around 85 per cent of the annual production consumed in the UK.

At various times, Marmite was banned in countries as diverse as Denmark, Canada and New Zealand because of its ingredients.
