Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the Italian word for "tomatoes"?

Answer: I pomodori

"Zucchini" are courgettes, "patate" are potatoes and "tramezzini" are sandwiches.
2. What is the Italian word for cheese?

Answer: Il formaggio

"Prosciutto" is ham, "il cinghiale" is a wild boar and "il coniglio" is a rabbit.
3. What is the Italian word for salmon?

Answer: Il salmone

All the options I gave are fish that can be served at a restaurant. "Il salmone" is salmon, "il tonno" is tuna, "il merluzzo" is cod and "la trota" is trout.
4. Let's have a drink. What is the Italian for a glass of red wine?

Answer: Un bicchiere di vino rosso

You will certainly have noticed that red wine is translated as "vino rosso". But the quantity in the different options differs.
"Un bicchiere" is a glass, what we were looking for. "Una bottiglia" is a bottle, and "un fiasco" is a specific kind of bottle (wrapped in straw), used mostly for chianti. If you would ask for "un barile" (a barrel) of red wine, you would definitely have a drinking problem.
5. What is the Italian word for "strawberries"?

Answer: Le fragole

This question contains various types of fruit. "Le mele" are apples, "Le noci" are nuts and "le pesche" are peaches. By the way, try not to confuse "le pesche" (peaches) with "il pesce" (fish). You might end up with an unusual combination of ingredients if you order "la zuppa di pesche" (peach soup) instead of "la zuppa di pesce".
6. Traduci dall'italiano all'inglese. Come si dice "i funghi" in inglese?

Answer: Mushrooms

Spinach is "gli spinaci", Brussels sprouts are "i cavoletti di Bruxelles" and beans are "i fagioli".
7. Che cosa dice James Bond quando ordina il suo Martini?

Answer: Agitato ma non mescolato

The question is: "What does James Bond say when he buys a Martini?"
James Bond likes his Martini "shaken but not stirred". You will certainly have noticed that the Italian word for "to shake" is "agitare", so shaken is "agitato". To stir is "mescolare" (literally "to mix up). The correct answer is thus "agitato ma non mescolato".

Most people would like not to pay for their Martini, but I doubt that the bartender will offer you a Martini that has not been paid for ("pagato").
The other options don't make any sense. For example, you'll best not drink your Martini ironed ("stirato"). Finally, you could very well be fond of dry Martini, but that does not mean you'd ask a Martini wiped off ("asciugato").
8. Traduci dall'italiano all'inglese. Come si dice "l'agnello" in inglese?

Answer: Lamb

"Il maiale" is pork, "il vitello" is veal and "il ragł" is stew.
9. Traduci dall'italiano all'inglese. Come si dice "una spremuta" in inglese?

Answer: Fruit juice (freshly made)

"Una spremuta" is fruit juice freshly made. Fruit juice out of a pack or a bottle is called "il succo di frutta".
Sparkling wine is "spumante", a word that is quite easily confused with "spremuta".
Sparkling water is "l'acqua gassata". Beer is simply "la birra".
10. Traduci dall'italiano all'inglese. Come si dice "il conto" in inglese?

Answer: Bill

A salt cellar is "la saliera". A napkin is less evident: this is translated as "il tovagliolo". Cutlery is "le posate", although you are likely to find sometimes the mention "pane e coperto". This latter phrase indicates that you are charged extra for bread and cutlery.
"Il conto" is the bill. But in several fast-food restaurants in Italy you would have to pay immediately after ordering your meal: you then pay "lo scontrino" and you pick up your meal with this bill.
