Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Like a number of other British chocolate manufacturers, John Cadbury, the company's founder, belonged to which religious community?

Answer: Quakers

John Cadbury opened a shop which sold cocoa and drinking chocolate in Bull Street, Birmingham in 1824. He then moved into large-scale production, opening the first Cadbury factory in 1831. Like the Fry, Rowntree and Terry families, also important British chocolate manufacturers, the Cadbury family belonged to the Society of Friends.
2. According to its advertising, how much full-cream milk went into a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk Chocolate?

Answer: A glass and a half

The Cadbury Dairy Milk bar was first produced in 1905. The "glass and a half" slogan was introduced in 1928.
3. In 1969 Cadbury merged with which long-established company, famous for its beverages?

Answer: Schweppes

The Schweppes Company was founded in 1783 to sell carbonated water. The merger with Schweppes marked the end of Cadbury as a Quaker family concern. Cadbury-Schweppes demerged in 2009.
4. When chocolate manufacturing moved out of central Birmingham, Cadbury's established a model village for the firm's employees. Also giving its name to a dark chocolate bar, what was this district called?

Answer: Bournville

George and Richard Cadbury, who had taken over the business from their father, moved production to Bournbrook Hall, four miles south of Birmingham, in 1879 and renamed the district Bournville. George Cadbury subsequently bought land nearby and planned a model village, largely consisting of Arts and Crafts style houses. The Bournville chocolate bar first went on sale in 1908.
5. One Cadbury Flake bar plus one ice cream cornet added up to which popular number?

Answer: 99

Cadbury's Flake bars were first produced in 1920 and in 1930 the company began making a shorter version of the bar to insert into ice cream, usually vanilla. The origin of the name "99" is unclear.
6. Which Cadbury's favourite was advertised as being "just enough to give your kids a treat"?

Answer: Fudge

"It's full of Cadbury goodness, but very clean and neat. A finger of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat". The jingle was created by Mike d'Abo, formerly of rock band Manfred Mann, and was based on the tune of the English folksong "The Lincolnshire Poacher".

The Fudge bar was launched in 1948. In 2010 production of the bar was transferred from Somerset to Poland.
7. A long-running TV advertising campaign featured a black-clad action man who would ski ahead of an avalanche, dive from a cliff or jump out of an aeroplane, and all because the lady loved which Cadbury's chocolates?

Answer: Milk Tray

The "Milk Tray Man" appeared in a series of advertisements between 1968 and 2003. He was revived in 2015 to mark the centenary of Milk Tray.
8. In 2010, Cadbury was controversially taken over by which American corporation?

Answer: Kraft Foods

The Kraft Corporation launched a hostile bid for Cadbury in 2009, completing the takeover in 2010. A week later Kraft went back on an apparent commitment to keep open a Cadbury factory at Somerdale near Bristol. The controversy aroused by the Kraft takeover led to a change in the rules governing the purchase of British companies by foreign firms.

The snacks arm of Kraft Foods was renamed Mondelez in 2012.
9. A long-running advertising campaign for which product combined the music of Tchaikovsky and the voice of British comedy writer Frank Muir?

Answer: Cadbury's Fruit and Nut

The Cadbury's Fruit and Nut Bar was launched in 1926. Using the slogan "Everyone's a fruit and nutcase" a series of advertisements featured verses set to the "Dance of the Reeds" from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" suite. The bar was rebranded as Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut in 2003 and in 2015 sultanas were introduced into the bars instead of the traditional raisins.
10. A change to the recipe of which seasonal Cadbury favourite proved controversial in 2015?

Answer: Creme Egg

Cadbury Creme Eggs are available every year between New Year and Easter. In 2015 it was announced that "standard cocoa mix chocolate" would be used for the shell of the egg instead of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate. This change led to complaints and reduced sales.
