Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these European languages is not usually written in the Cyrillic alphabet?

Answer: Albanian

English speakers are mainly familiar with the Cyrillic alphabet as the alphabet used for writing Russian. Albanian uses a customized version of the Latin alphabet. Bulgarian, Macedonian and Serbian are all written in Cyrillic and will look nearly identical to Russian to non-speakers of these languages.
2. Spanish is the official language of every Central American country except Belize. What is the official language of Belize?

Answer: English

Spanish is very widely spoken in Belize, but due to its British colonial history the official language is English. Belize was a former colonial possession of Great Britain, and was called British Honduras from 1862 until 1973.
3. The tiny nation of Andorra, nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, is the only country in the world to have which official language?

Answer: Catalan

Catalan is spoken in parts of France and Spain. In Andorra it is the only official language.
4. Although the official languages of Pakistan are Urdu and English, the most widely-spoken first language in Pakistan is what?

Answer: Punjabi

Approximately 100 million Indians and Pakistanis speak Punjabi, making it the 12th most widely-spoken language in the world. Strong differences in accent exist between different regions.
5. Which island is the most linguistically diverse area on the Earth, home to probably about 1,000 languages still spoken today?

Answer: New Guinea

Much of New Guinea is a series of dense jungle valleys separated by high mountainous ridges. This extreme geography caused many communities to exist in isolation from each other over long periods of time, which resulted in extensive linguistic diversification.
6. This African language, widely spoken in Kenya and Tanzania, includes many words borrowed from Arabic. What is it?

Answer: Swahili

Swahili was influenced by Arab-African trade near the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, where Arab seafarers and African merchants mingled for centuries.
7. Which of these languages is one of the six official languages of the United Nations?

Answer: Arabic

The six official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish. Combined, nearly half the planet speaks these six languages.
8. Which of these languages is most closely related to Hungarian?

Answer: Finnish

Strangely enough, Finnish and Estonian are the closest major European relatives of Hungarian. They are all from the Uralic family of languages, which originated in what is now central Russia. It is a separate family from the Indo-European family to which most other European languages belong.
9. The first Bible ever printed in North America was produced in 1663. In which language was it written?

Answer: Algonquin

Missionary John Eliot printed it as part of his mission to convert the Massachusett Indians, one of many New England tribes who spoke that language. Not surprisingly, this was in modern-day Massachusetts. These languages are all still spoken today. Ute comes from Utah, not colonized in 1663, and Dene is mainly spoken in the territories of modern-day Alberta, Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories, also not yet colonized in 1663. Mohawk speakers live mainly in Southern Ontario and Northern New York.
10. This language used to be written using Chinese characters until the 15th Century, when the king commissioned the creation of a new alphabet which is still in use to this day. What is it?

Answer: Korean

The system is called Hangul. To Westerners it may look similar to Chinese, but each character block is in fact a syllable, and contains the corresponding consonant and vowel symbols.
