Picture of Woman Applying Makeup

By Kitagawa Utamaro

Painting Information
Famed ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro was the first practitioner of, and produced a great number of paintings of, the style known in Japanese as "bijin-ga okubi-e." This translates loosely to "face portraits of beautiful women." The okubi-e style of art wasn't limited to just women, but Utamaro's portraits typically portrayed them, often with them going about their private business.

"Picture of Woman Applying Makeup" was actually part of a series titled "Seven Women Applying Make-up Using a Mirror." However, the other prints have been lost to history, this being the only surviving work. The portrait is believed to show a real-life teahouse girl named Naniwa O-Kita; soon after, it became illegal to name real-life subjects in Japanese paintings.
