Ireland is divided into four provinces: Ulster, Munster, Leinster, and Connacht.
Ulster encompasses 3 counties in the Republic of Ireland - Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan - as well as the 6 counties that form Northern Ireland: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry and Tyrone. County Antrim is home to Belfast and to the Giants Causeway.
Munster covers the South quarter: Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. It is home to the beautiful MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Ireland's highest mountain range, the tallest being Carrauntoohil (3,407 ft).
Leinster, aka The Ancient East comprises of Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. Louth is the smallest county in Ireland by size, whilst Dublin City is the largest city by population (500,000 people).
Connacht in the West is made up of Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo. Galway City is the only city in Connacht, and Leitrim is the least populated county. In fact the five counties in total have a population of not much more than Dublin City. It is sometimes referred to as the Wild West due to its scenery and rugged landscapes which include The Burren and Lake Corrib.
