Here are two people doing just that; it doesn't explain the phrase's origin however.

I'm guessing the origin is about the same as that of the phrase "working for peanuts", as in putting in the work for the minimum amount of benefit. (The other term is wonderfully parodied in the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" where an animated elephant is shown doing exactly what the phrase implies.)
