Ben Cartwright first married Elizabeth Stoddard, presumably from New England, who died in childbirth, giving birth to Adam, the eldest brother.
Next, he married Inger Borgstrom, who was Swedish. She gave birth to Eric (Hoss), but she was killed by Indians.
Lastly, he married Marie DeMarigny, presumably from Boston, who gave birth to Little Joe. She later died after falling from a horse.
Ben's wives each appear in a flashback episode - "Elizabeth, my love"; "Inger, my love" and "Marie, my love".

I'm sorry, but I thought Marie was from New Orleans. Remember, Adam and Joe had an argument and Adam went for the button, "your French Quarter mother."
