For more than two decades, Jerry Garcia, the lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead, has serenaded legions of faithful followers -- many of whom favor tie-dyed T-shirts. Now aging Deadheads can dress up with some of Mr. Garcia's artistry.
Stonehenge Ltd., a New York neckwear manufacturer, is introducing a tie collection based on Mr. Garcia's minimalist drawings and abstract paintings.
Mr. Garcia, whose signature look is a black T-shirt and coordinated jeans and "who probably never wore a tie in his life," laughed when he recently received a box of samples, said Irwin Sternberg, the company's president. Stonehenge expects to sell 84,000 of the $28.50 silk crepe ties to large department stores.
Bloomingdale's is introducing eight designs of the ties to shoppers tomorrow in the hope that they will appeal to fans who now find themselves on Wall Street rather than on the road.
