During the Berlin Blockade (1948/49) by the Soviets, the Western allies decided to organize the Berlin Airlift to support the city of Berlin with necessities like fuel and food. Gail Halvorsen was one of the USAF pilots taking part.
Soon after the beginning of the airlift, Halvorsen started - without informing his superiors - the "Operation Little Vittles". In addtion to flying supplies to the airport of Tempelhof, he also dropped little parachutes with sweets for the children.
Halvorsen's operation dropped over 23 tons of candy to the children and he became known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber" and "The Chocolate Flier".
Allied aircrafts came in every 90 seconds, so the children awaiting the candies had difficulties recognizing Halvorsen's plane. One day, one child asked him "How will we know it is your plane?". Halvorsen replied that he would wiggle his wings when approaching the airport. This way, he earned himself a third moniker - Uncle Wiggly Wings.
