Because it supposedly caused seizures in 700 Japanese children. Pokemon was also taken off the air for four months and suffered a barrage of abuse from the media.

The problem occurred because the animators used a "rapidly-strobing technique" using flashing red and blue lights to simulate a virtual explosion onscreen.

In people with photosensitive epilepsy (5% of epileptics) seizures are caused by flashing and flickering lights
