Is Paganism a religion?

Paganism is not a single religion, it is a label that is applied to a range of religions. Originally Christians applied it to religions that were not monotheistic (and used it as a synonym for gentile or heathen), but there are a number of religions that fit that description. In modern times, religions that identify themselves as pagan are usually polytheistic, often with a focus on nature that approximates the group of religions generally grouped as animist.
