Although Rita Moreno and Ariana Debose are (as of 2022) the only actors to have won the same category for playing the same character in two different versions of the same film, John Wayne and Jeff Bridges were both nominated as Best Actor for playing Rooster Cogburn in two different versions of "True Grit"; Wayne won the category at the 42nd Academy Awards, while Bridges lost out to Colin Firth at the 83rd Academy Awards. Additionally, Laurence Olivier (19th Academy Awards) and Kenneth Branagh (62nd Academy Awards) were both nominated for Best Actor for portraying the lead in their adaptations of Shakespeare's "Henry V", losing out to Frederic March and Daniel Day-Lewis respectively.

In addition, although the characters were different, the actors in the two lead roles in three of the four versions of "A Star is Born" - Frederic March and Janet Gaynor (1937); James Mason and Judy Garland (1954); and Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga (2018) - were each nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress in the Academy Award ceremonies for their respective films.
