Why were the light cavalry of the 15th and 16th centuries known as "hussars"?

The etymology of "hussar" is basically "brigand". The soldiers started as small lightly armored bands who were derided by the proud knights of the time. Over time these bands became bigger and better trained but maintained the style of dress keeping the title of "hussars".
