Bombardier beetles use a hot chemical spray, released from their abdomens with an explosive sound. This has proved effective against avian, amphibian and insect predators.

Described as a "caustic (or crazy) chemical cannon", the mixture of irritating chemicals includes benzoquinone. The chemicals are superheated and expelled in an intense jet.
