Suriname[formerly known as Dutch Guiana] was part of the much larger Dutch colonial Empire starting from the 17th century and would remain so until 1975 when it was granted full independence by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Fun fact right here: Suriname remains the only sovereign state outside of Europe where Dutch is the official language.
Although Dutch is the sole official language, only 60 % of the population are native speakers of Dutch and around 20 to 30 % speak it as a second language.
