The rider, one Frank Hayes (1901-June 4, 1923) was not a professional jockey, but a stableman and trainer. He died from a heart attack during the race, with his body remaining in the saddle when Sweet Kiss won the race by a head.

He is the first and (as far as it's known) the only jockey to have won a race after death.
The horse never raced again, and it's claimed that Sweet Kiss was nicknamed "Sweet Kiss of Death" for the rest of her life.
