What is considered to be the cause of Harry Houdini's death? (hint, it wasn't drowning!)

Harry Houdini (Erik Weisz) was showing that he could take a punch and was struck twice in the abdomen by a medical student. This led to pain and an elevated temperature the next day followed by a diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

Houdini refused further treatment and went ahead with a planned performance. Afterwards, his wife, Bess, had him rushed to hospital. An emergency operation removed his ruptured appendix. However sepsis had set in and he died after a second operation.
