Pope Saint Leo I (c. 400-461) was the first pope to earn "the Great" epithet. His papacy was from 29 September 440 until his death on 10 November 461.

He met Attila the Hun in 452 and persuaded him to forgo invading Italy. One of Raphael's paintings is "The Meeting between Leo the Great and Attila."
