The prestigious John Newbery Medal (aka the Newbery) is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children to the author making distinguished contributions to American literature for children. The award was established in 1921.
John Newbery published "The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes" in 1765 in London. The story is a Cinderella variant and popularised the phrase "goody two shoes" as meaning a very virtuous person.
