Theodore Roosevelt, 26th U.S. President, negotiated peace in the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5). He helped settle the Treaty of Portsmouth.
The signing of the treaty created three decades of peace between the two nations and confirmed Japan's emergence as the pre-eminent power in East Asia.
