Snake Island, or Ilha da Queimada Grande is a 43 hectare (106 acre) island in the Atlantic Ocean.

The critically endangered golden lancehead pit viper ("Bothrops insularis") is only found on the island. These venomous snakes represent a public danger.

So the island is closed to the public to protect both the snake population and people.
