In 2007, Pugh wearing just his speedos, completed a 1 km (0.62 mi) swim across an open stretch of sea at the North Pole. The water temperature was minus 1.7 °C (29 °F).
One year earlier, Lewis Pugh completed what is known as the "Holy Grail" of swimming, completing long-distance swims in each of the five world oceans: Atlantic (1992), Arctic (2005), Southern (2005), Indian (2006) and Pacific (2006).
