The Victoria Cross was first given out on 26 June 1857 to soldiers who fought with "valor in the presence of the enemy" during the Crimean War. 62 soldiers were presented with a cross medal by Queen Victoria, herself. The award has continued to be issued to brave British soldiers, as well as Commonwealth soldiers, and can be given posthumously.
